Who We Are:
At Northland, we’re enablers of change, united by our journey to transform the energy sector into the foundation for a sustainable future.

Since our inception, we’ve been early movers in the energy industry, adopting new initiatives that pave the way for communities across the globe and helping forge their path towards a carbon-neutral landscape.

We’re a different kind of independent power producer. As developers, owners and operators who are at the forefront of the energy transition, we’re uniquely positioned to leave a lasting impact in the regions where we operate. We’ve expanded our business across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia to become a global leader, all by bringing together industry experts to find solutions with an entrepreneurial mindset.

While our work powers communities across the globe, Northland is powered by our people.

What You’ll Do
As Senior Manager, Gas Origination, you will build and lead Northland’s in-house gas commercial capability. You will secure and optimize gas supply, transportation and storage for Northland’s gas-fired fleet, originate and negotiate commodity and asset management agreements, and structure the gas procurement strategies that underpin new gas-fired development.
Working within approved risk limits, you will capture value from existing gas assets, bring critical gas expertise in-house, and represent Northland on commercial gas matters with marketers, pipelines and industry stakeholders.

The role will be required to work in the Toronto office four days per week with one flexible day to work from home
###

Key Responsibilities

Gas Supply & Procurement

·       Develop and execute gas procurement strategies for Northland’s operating gas-fired facilities, aligned with PPA requirements, dispatch profiles and approved risk limits.

·       Lead the origination, negotiation and renewal of gas commodity, asset management and agency agreements, including RFPs to select marketers and asset managers.

·       Manage firm and interruptible transportation, storage and balancing contracts, including renewals, capacity decisions and assignments.

·       Build and maintain strong relationships with marketers, pipelines, storage operators and other gas counterparties.

Asset Optimization & Deal Structuring

·       Value and optimize transportation, storage and balancing positions, including unused capacity, locational and seasonal spreads, and asset management structures.

·       Structure commercial arrangements, such as fixed-fee, profit-sharing and indexed structures, that maximize value while managing price, counterparty and operational risk.

·       Develop gas price and basis hedging strategies in partnership with Risk and within approved limits.

·       Provide budget inputs and variance analysis, and support Market Operations with gas inputs to support market offer strategies.

·       Approve ad-hoc gas trades within approved limits and support gas volume forecasting, including monthly forecasts and coverage during planned outages.

Development & Growth Support

·       Structure and execute gas supply and transportation strategies that underpin new gas-fired development opportunities and competitive RFP bids.

·       Provide gas cost, transportation and commodity-risk inputs to business cases, term sheets and negotiations, including tolling and PPA structures.

·       Assess pipeline expansions, open seasons and capacity opportunities that support project development.

·       Work with development, engineering and project teams to define gas requirements for new projects, including pipeline interconnection, capacity planning and permitting.

Operations Interface & Governance

·       Work with thermal site teams, Market Operations and third-party marketers to align nominations, balancing and gas availability with dispatch and outage plans.

·       Monitor gas consumption across the fleet and work with facility operations to reduce gas use and costs.

·       Establish gas management processes, controls and escalation protocols, including off-hours coverage and contingency plans for constrained periods such as winter.

·       Monitor gas market fundamentals, pipeline tolls and tariffs, participate in pipeline tolls task forces, and work with Regulatory Affairs on proceedings affecting Northland’s gas access and costs.

·       Maintain a clear record of contractual entitlements and obligations across gas agreements, and manage trading platform access with Risk.

·       Act as a vetting agent for gas settlement checks, particularly on optimization revenues and asset management arrangements, and lead resolution of disputes with counterparties when volumes do not reconcile; routine settlement processing remains with the facilities.

Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

·       Represent Northland externally on commercial gas matters with marketers, pipelines, industry associations and working groups.

·       Serve as the first point of escalation for facilities on commercial gas matters, including commodity and transportation issues during constrained winter periods, and as the internal subject-matter expert for Development, Asset Management, Finance, Risk and Legal.

·       Build team capability over time, including mentoring analysts and defining future resourcing needs as the gas portfolio grows.

Who You Are

·       A commercial dealmaker: You originate, structure and negotiate gas agreements that create measurable value while protecting Northland from undue risk.

·       A gas markets expert: You understand North American gas hubs, pipeline systems and storage, and how gas costs interact with power markets, PPAs and dispatch.

·       A disciplined risk manager: You make sound commercial decisions under uncertainty, operate within risk limits and escalate issues with clear recommendations.

·       A builder and collaborator: You thrive in building new capabilities and partner effectively with operations, development, finance and external counterparties.

Qualifications and Experience

·       Bachelor’s degree in engineering, economics, finance, business or a related field; MBA or relevant professional designation is an asset.

·       7 to 10+ years of experience in natural gas origination, marketing, trading, asset management or procurement, ideally supporting gas-fired power generation.

·       Strong knowledge of Canadian gas markets, including AECO/NIT and Dawn hubs and the NGTL, TC Energy, Enbridge and TransGas systems; Alberta experience is strongly preferred.

·       Demonstrated experience negotiating commodity, transportation, storage and asset management agreements.

·       Experience valuing and optimizing transportation and storage assets and structured gas transactions.

·       Understanding of electricity markets such as IESO and AESO, and how gas costs flow through PPAs and market offers.

·       Strong analytical and financial modelling skills, including advanced Excel; Python or SQL experience is an asset.
