ASU EdPlus is a dynamic unit of Arizona State University focused on the design and scalable delivery of digital teaching and learning models to increase student success and reduce barriers to achievement in higher education. We advance the economic, social, cultural, and overall health of the local, national, and international communities served by ASU.

We are seeking a Learning Assessment Lead to join our Digital Learning team. For background: assessments set what students read, what they practice, what they skip, and what they remember six months later. Most online assessments were designed for a world in which producing a plausible answer was expensive. That cost has collapsed, and the gap between how courses measure learning and how learning actually happens is now impossible to ignore. Detection is not the answer; redesign is. That will be your focus, alongside faculty, in the courses where it matters most.

Every day you will make a difference in the lives of others by treating academic integrity as a learning outcome produced by good course design rather than a compliance outcome enforced through surveillance. We believe in moving the institution away from proctoring as a default solution, and toward tasks that resist AI completion because they require situated, contextual, human work.

You will co-create assessments with faculty where “did AI do this?” stops being the question, because the task itself leaves verifiable evidence of thinking. You will be prototyping performance tasks, building oral defense rubrics, designing assignments where drafting and revision are part of what gets submitted, and crafting portfolio artifacts that ask students to apply their knowledge as they would in a professional setting.

You will work within a highly collaborative, cross-functional studio model, designing alongside data scientists, user experience researchers, product managers, instructional designers, multimedia producers, and visionary faculty. Together, you will prove that assessment redesign is the most powerful lever we have for course improvement at scale

This role provides an extraordinary platform: institutional backing, willing faculty partners, and an enterprise scale where a single proven assessment pattern can impact tens of thousands of students. Most professionals tackle this work one course at a time in their spare time; at EdPlus, it is the core mission.

Essential Duties:

Assessment Design & Patterns

- Co-Create Authentic Tasks: Partner with faculty to replace traditional exams with performance tasks, oral defenses, simulations, and process-visible portfolios, explicitly shifting away from surveillance and proctoring.
- Build Scalable Libraries: Document reusable assessment templates, rubrics, and implementation guides for broad adoption across disciplines.
- Map Curricular Pathways: Sequence assessments across degree programs so student evidence builds logically from course to course.

Faculty Partnerships & Cohorts

- Facilitate Faculty Cohorts: Recruit and lead discipline-aligned working groups, guiding faculty through structured assessment transformation cycles in a collaborative ecosystem.
- Provide Individual Coaching: Mentor faculty through the friction of translating learning science into practical, gradable course revisions.

Learning Science & Evidence

- Translate Pedagogical Theory: Ground design choices in backward design, constructive alignment, and cognitive load theory to guide faculty decision-making.
- Measure Assessment Impact: Partner with cross-functional research teams to evaluate how redesigned assessments affect student learning, engagement, and persistence.

Assume or coordinate other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

NOTE: This is an in-person, hybrid position. You must be able to reliably commute to Scottsdale AZ.

Desired Qualifications:

- Terminal Degree: Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent in a teaching discipline, learning sciences, or instructional design.
- Teaching Record: Experience as a higher education instructor of record, responsible for designing and grading assessments.
- Theory Expertise : Demonstrated mastery of assessment theory, including backward design, constructive alignment, and AI-resilient modalities.
- Facilitation History : Demonstrated success leading faculty cohorts, learning communities, or university-wide design initiatives.
- Assessment Artifacts : 1-2 college-level assessment artifacts you have designed, such as a performance task, rubric, oral defense protocol, or faculty redesign guide, may be required, along with documented impacts on student learning.

NOTE: Please answer the following questions in your cover letter:

- Describe an assessment you redesigned that fundamentally changed student engagement. What did it replace and how did you measure success?

- Describe a time when a faculty member resisted an assessment redesign recommendation and how you navigated that objection.
