About this role

About DeWitt LLP

DeWitt LLP is a full-service law firm serving clients throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. We are committed to providing exceptional legal services through collaboration, practical problem-solving, and a dedication to excellence. Our culture is built on strong relationships, professional growth, and a shared commitment to doing what is right for our clients and our colleagues.

At DeWitt, we believe being part of a team means working together, sharing knowledge, and stepping in where help is needed. We value people who take ownership of their work, embrace new challenges, and look for opportunities to make a positive impact.

Position Overview

DeWitt LLP is seeking a motivated, adaptable, and service-oriented Legal Assistant to join our Madison office. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, takes initiative, and is excited to learn new things. Rather than focusing on a single practice area, this individual will provide legal and administrative support across multiple areas of law, working with attorneys and colleagues to keep matters organized, deadlines on track, and client service at the forefront.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter who is comfortable shifting priorities, learning new processes, and stepping in to support the team's needs. We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work, approaches challenges with a positive attitude, and understands that every task, large or small, contributes to our clients' and the firm's success.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide legal and administrative support to attorneys across multiple practice areas, adapting to changing workloads and business needs.

- Prepare, format, proofread, and revise correspondence, pleadings, agreements, memoranda, and other legal documents.

- Manage electronic files, maintain accurate records, and organize documents in accordance with firm procedures.

- Assist with court filings, electronic filing systems, service of documents, and other matter-related administrative requirements.

- Monitor deadlines, maintain calendars, and help ensure that appointments, filings, and other critical dates are met.

- Coordinate meetings, appointments, and other activities while managing competing priorities effectively.

- Communicate professionally and responsively with attorneys, colleagues, clients, courts, and outside parties.

- Anticipate needs, follow through on assignments, and take ownership of tasks from start to finish.

- Learn new practice-area procedures, technology, and workflows to provide effective support wherever needed.

- Collaborate with colleagues throughout the firm, sharing knowledge and assisting with workload demands as appropriate.

- Maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and consistently produce accurate, high-quality work.

- Identify opportunities to improve processes, solve problems, and contribute to an efficient and positive work environment.

- Perform other duties as needed to support attorneys, clients, and the firm.

Qualifications

Qualifications

- Prior legal assistant, administrative, or professional office experience preferred; relevant transferable experience will also be considered.

- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

- Ability to demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, and a willingness to take ownership of responsibilities.

- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively across different practice areas.

- Curiosity and a genuine interest in learning new skills, systems, and procedures.

- A collaborative, team-oriented approach and a willingness to assist others when needed.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn new technology quickly.

- Professionalism, discretion, and a commitment to protecting confidential information.

- A positive, solutions-oriented attitude and a commitment to providing excellent service.

What Success Looks Like

The successful candidate will become a trusted and dependable resource for attorneys and colleagues throughout the Madison office. They will approach unfamiliar assignments with curiosity rather than hesitation, recognize when to ask questions, and follow through until work is complete. They will balance accuracy with efficiency, communicate proactively, and help create a seamless experience for both internal and external clients.

Most importantly, they will understand that being part of a successful legal team means more than completing assigned tasks. It means anticipating needs, embracing opportunities to learn, treating others with respect, and contributing wherever their skills can make a difference.
