Diesel Shop Assistant

S.J. Louis is seeking a dependable Shop Assistant / Mechanic's Assistant to support our heavy construction equipment repair shop in Rockville. This entry-level position assists mechanics with equipment service and repairs while keeping the shop, yard, tools, and supplies organized and ready for use.

This is an opportunity for someone with basic mechanical experience to build hands-on skills working around diesel- and gas-powered construction equipment.

Key Responsibilities

- Gather and prepare tools, parts, and supplies needed for scheduled work.

- Assist with cleaning equipment and preparing it for service or repair.

- Work with experienced diesel mechanics on fleet repair and service tasks.

- Help organize and maintain the shop and yard, including work areas, tool storage, and parts and supply areas.

- Communicate parts and supply needs to mechanics or the shop supervisor.

- Return tools and equipment to designated storage areas and report damaged or missing items.

- Follow shop safety procedures, use required personal protective equipment, and promptly report hazards.

- Support other shop and yard tasks as priorities change.

Required Qualifications

- Basic mechanical experience and familiarity with common hand and power tools.

- Willingness to learn and follow instructions from mechanics and the shop supervisor.

- Ability to stay organized, communicate clearly, and work as part of a team.

- Commitment to safe work practices and proper care of tools and equipment.

- Experience working with construction equipment preferred.

- Welding experience a plus.

Work Environment

Work takes place in a repair shop and outdoor equipment yard, with exposure to changing weather, noise, dirt, grease, and moving equipment. Duties involve standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and handling tools and parts. Required tasks must be performed safely, with reasonable accommodation as applicable.
