Onsite Project Manager – Industrial Engineering & Plant Projects

Position Overview
AMG, Inc. is seeking an experienced Onsite Project Manager to support the continued growth of our engineering services at a major corn wet milling facility in Argo, Illinois. This position will work directly with the clients personnel, onsite contractors, and AMGs engineering team to coordinate and manage a diverse portfolio of industrial plant projects, ranging from small equipment modifications to multimillion-dollar capital improvements.

The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of industrial process plants, mechanical equipment, piping systems, and plant construction, along with the project management skills needed to oversee budgets, develop proposals, coordinate engineering resources, and keep projects moving safely and efficiently.

This is a client-facing role suited for someone who is comfortable working in an active industrial environment, communicating with stakeholders at all levels, and managing projects from initial scope development through execution and completion. The successful candidate will initially oversee a smaller number of projects, with the opportunity to grow into managing approximately 20–30 concurrent projects as the workload expands.

Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Execution

- Manage multiple industrial plant projects ranging in value from approximately $5,000 to $10 million or more, including equipment upgrades, piping modifications, plant improvements, and capital projects.

- Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, resource plans, and execution strategies in coordination with the client and AMGs engineering team.

- Monitor project costs, commitments, expenditures, and forecasted costs to maintain budgetary control and identify potential variances.

- Track project milestones, deliverables, and critical-path activities to help ensure timely completion.

- Prepare project proposals, cost estimates, and supporting documentation for client review and approval.

- Provide regular project status updates, including progress, budget performance, schedule changes, outstanding decisions, and potential risks.

- Identify project challenges early and coordinate practical solutions to minimize delays, cost overruns, and disruptions to plant operations.

Client & Contractor Coordination

- Serve as the primary day-to-day liaison between the client, onsite contractors, and AMGs engineering and design team.

- Communicate project requirements, priorities, schedules, and resource needs to contractors and other project stakeholders.

- Coordinate contractor activities with plant operations, maintenance, engineering, and other affected departments as needed.

- Facilitate project meetings, document action items, follow up on outstanding issues, and maintain clear communication among all parties.

- Coordinate contractor access, work sequencing, equipment requirements, and construction activities in accordance with applicable site procedures.

- Build and maintain productive working relationships with the client and project partners through responsive communication, sound judgment, and consistent follow-through.

Engineering & Construction Coordination

- Collaborate with AMGs mechanical, electrical, structural, and other engineering disciplines to coordinate design deliverables and resolve technical questions.

- Review and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, piping layouts, equipment arrangements, specifications, and other construction documents.

- Apply practical knowledge of industrial equipment, process piping, plant infrastructure, and construction methods to evaluate project requirements and identify potential issues.

- Coordinate design reviews, field measurements, site walks, and technical discussions to support project execution.

- Identify discrepancies between design documents and existing field conditions and coordinate resolution with the appropriate engineering personnel.

- Support field verification and construction progress reviews to confirm work aligns with approved project requirements and applicable standards.

- Maintain project documentation, including scopes, proposals, budgets, schedules, meeting notes, change requests, and closeout records.

Required Qualifications

- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience managing or coordinating engineering, construction, capital improvement, or equipment-related projects in an industrial or chemical process plant environment.

- Demonstrated experience working onsite at an operating chemical or process manufacturing facility.

- Practical understanding of industrial equipment, process piping, plant construction, and the coordination of contractors in an active industrial environment.

- Ability to read, interpret, and understand engineering drawings, blueprints, CAD drawings, specifications, and related technical documents.

- Experience managing project budgets, schedules, scopes, proposals, and project status reporting.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, contractors, engineers, and plant personnel.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.

- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing demands while managing multiple projects.

- Sound judgment, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.

- Ability to meet the physical and site-access requirements of an industrial plant environment, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred; degrees in Chemical Engineering or Structural Engineering will also be considered.

- An associate degree or two-year technical degree combined with 10 or more years of directly relevant industrial project management experience will also be considered.

- Experience in corn wet milling, food processing, chemical manufacturing, or another complex process industry.

- Familiarity with mechanical systems, pumps, tanks, heat exchangers, industrial utilities, piping systems, and process equipment.

- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering design teams and managing contractor deliverables.

- Working knowledge of project management and construction management software, particularly Procore.
