## Project Overview:
For more than 75 years, Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) has supported the UK Government’s nuclear defence strategy and the Continuous at Sea Deterrent. They use nuclear know-how and technical expertise to provide innovative solutions that support the UK’s counterterrorism and nuclear threat reduction activities. Like Bechtel, they create and maintain a safe operating culture where safety is front and centre of everything, they do. From building state-of-the-art facilities, to supporting Production, Science, Engineering and Technology programmes, the management of Environment, Safety, Health and Wellbeing underpins all activities at AWE.
Bechtel is collaborating with AWE as an integrated team to deliver the preliminary design for the facilities within the Future Materials Campus. Since 2023, Bechtel has provided delivery and technical support, ensuring the project is completed on schedule and within budget.
## Job Summary:
This Senior Control and Instrumentation Engineer position will support a multi-year United Kingdom nuclear infrastructure programme for which Bechtel is providing project management and engineering services. The programme is currently in the conceptual design phase and represents a multi-billion-pound investment in nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.
The successful candidate will be a proactive and motivated professional who supports the Engineering Delivery Managers through the Building & Services (B&S) Project Engineer, acting as a technical representative for engineering activities. Responsibilities will include supporting engineering design delivery, preparing technical documentation, executing scheduled engineering activities, undertaking quality checks, and contributing to overall project delivery. The role will also involve producing technical reports, studies, designs and calculations using engineering software and supporting systems, as well as preparing procurement documentation including quantities. You will participate in design reviews and facilitate the timely resolution of comments to the satisfaction of reviewers, enabling the delivery of approved products. In addition, you will review and coordinate deliverables produced by junior C&I engineers across the B&S and Plant, Process & Equipment (PP&E) teams.
You will be expected to work independently, exercise sound engineering judgement, and develop effective approaches to resolving technical challenges. You will also provide guidance to colleagues and respond constructively to requests for assistance with technical or procedural matters. The role includes supporting the effective execution of discipline work processes, ensuring that all activities are technically robust and comply with company requirements, contractual obligations, and applicable industry codes and standards.
This position is designated as full time with telework per our global telework policy and requires at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project.
• The role will be based primarily at Aldermaston UK, however travel to Bechtel’s London office (near Covent Garden) may also be required. Flexibility in work locations includes three days per week working at the project site and two days working from home or the Bechtel office. This arrangement will change as project needs adjust.
• The position is open to United Kingdom (UK) Nationals only.
• This position is also subject to a successful interview and agreement upon terms and conditions of employment.
## Major Responsibilities:
- • Technical leadership: Act as the technical authority for control, instrumentation, automation, and systems engineering activities, providing advice to engineering and project management.
• Control system design: Develop and review control philosophies, system architectures, functional design specifications, control narratives, logic diagrams, cause-and-effect matrices, and alarm schedules.
• Instrumentation engineering: Specify and select field instruments, analysers, control valves, actuators, measurement systems, and associated equipment.
• Systems integration: Coordinate the integration of control and instrumentation systems with electrical, mechanical, process, safety, communications, and plant information systems.
• Safety systems: Support the design and substantiation of safety-related and safety-instrumented systems, including appropriate independence, redundancy, diversity, and defence-in-depth requirements.
• Requirements management: Define, interpret, trace, and verify technical, functional, performance, safety, security, and regulatory requirements throughout the engineering lifecycle.
• Design assurance: Ensure designs are technically robust, fit for purpose, operable, maintainable, testable, and compliant with project requirements.
• Codes and standards compliance: Apply relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, industry standards, contractual obligations, and company procedures.
• Cybersecurity coordination: Incorporate applicable industrial control system and operational technology cybersecurity requirements into system design and delivery.
• Technical documentation: Prepare and review calculations, reports, studies, drawings, specifications, data sheets, equipment schedules, interface documents, and procurement packages.
• Design reviews: Participate in interdisciplinary, safety, constructability, operability, maintainability, HAZID, HAZOP, and 3D model reviews, ensuring comments are resolved.
• Interface management: Identify and manage technical interfaces between systems, disciplines, suppliers, contractors, facilities, and external stakeholders.
• Supplier and procurement support: Prepare technical requisitions, evaluate bids, review supplier documentation, monitor technical performance, and support equipment acceptance.
