About this role
Job Title: Construction Superintendent Job Description
This role leads the field operations for ground-up commercial construction projects, with a strong emphasis on Construction Manager at Risk delivery. The superintendent oversees all on-site activities from preconstruction through turnover, personally builds and manages project schedules, and coordinates multiple trades to ensure safe, high-quality, and on-time completion. The position is ideal for an experienced superintendent or a high-performing assistant superintendent ready to step into a lead role in the Reno area, especially on proposal-based projects where reputation and regional experience are highly valued.
Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day field operations for ground-up commercial construction projects from preconstruction through final turnover.
- Serve as the lead on-site manager, working closely with an assistant superintendent and a project manager to oversee all aspects of the project.
- Manage the full construction scope, including civil work, dirt work, site packages, slab work, structural components, and final build-out.
- Personally build, update, and manage project schedules, ensuring accurate sequencing of activities and realistic timelines.
- Use scheduling software such as Microsoft Project (and potentially P6) to maintain current and detailed project schedules.
- Coordinate and supervise multiple trades and subcontractors, ensuring proper sequencing of work and resolving conflicts in the field.
- Run the field operations directly rather than focusing solely on project administration, maintaining a strong presence on the jobsite.
- Oversee the implementation of construction means and methods to meet quality, safety, and performance expectations.
- Ensure accurate documentation of daily activities, including daily logs, progress tracking, and field reports.
- Utilize construction management software such as Procore, Autodesk tools, and the Microsoft Office Suite to manage information, documentation, and communication.
- Collaborate with the broader project team to support proposal-based and Construction Manager at Risk projects, contributing to successful project delivery and client satisfaction.
- Monitor project progress, identify potential issues, and implement corrective actions to keep work on schedule and within scope.
- Ensure that all field work complies with project specifications, plans, and applicable codes and standards.
- Participate in preconstruction planning, including understanding site conditions, logistics, and phasing requirements.
- Support a culture of long-term commitment by contributing to a stable, high-performing project team and representing the company positively in the Reno market.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience delivering Construction Manager at Risk projects, ideally with regional experience and name recognition in the Reno area.
- Demonstrated background in ground-up commercial construction, including civil work, site packages, and slab work.
- Experience running the field as a superintendent or as a long-term assistant superintendent who has taken on significant leadership responsibilities.
- Ability to lead and manage entire construction projects, not just individual components such as concrete or interiors.
- Strong scheduling proficiency, including building, updating, and maintaining project schedules.
- Hands-on experience with scheduling software such as Microsoft Project; experience with P6 is highly valued.
- High level of computer literacy, with the ability to operate software effectively rather than simply open applications.
- Proficiency with Procore construction management software.
- Proficiency with Autodesk tools used in construction workflows.
- Strong skills in the Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and related tools.
- Experience managing projects over $5 million in value, or comparable large-scale commercial projects.
- Proven ability to manage multiple trades and coordinate complex sequencing of work.
- Strong project leadership and project management capabilities in a field environment.
- Experience with proposal-based work where qualifications and reputation are critical to winning projects.
- Clear understanding of the full project lifecycle from preconstruction through turnover.
- Preference for candidates with commercial construction experience; residential-only backgrounds are not considered a good fit.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Regional experience in the Reno area, including local market familiarity and recognition, is highly desirable.
- Experience specifically with Construction Manager at Risk delivery methods is a major plus.
- background with school district or similar public-sector projects is beneficial, given the nature of many local opportunities.
- Experience as an assistant superintendent on numerous ground-up projects and readiness to step into a lead superintendent role.
- Exposure to projects where a large portion of costs are tied to site work and civil packages.
- Experience working with a general contractor on commercial ground-up projects.
- Ability to learn and further develop scheduling skills under the guidance of a general superintendent.
- Track record of long-term commitment to employers, demonstrating stability and a focus on building a lasting career.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, assistant superintendents, and field teams.
- A performance-driven mindset, with the ability to excel in a role that values high performers even if they are still developing in certain areas.
Work Environment
The work environment centers on active construction sites for ground-up commercial projects in and around the Reno area. Superintendents work as part of a collaborative project team that includes a project manager and an assistant superintendent, rather than operating in isolation. The culture emphasizes support, coaching, and long-term development, with leadership willing to teach scheduling and other advanced skills to high-performing individuals who are ready to grow. The company focuses on building a stable, long-term team and seeks professionals who want a permanent role and are committed to investing in their careers. The environment is pragmatic and resourceful, providing practical support such as a company truck and fuel card to meet the day-to-day needs of field leadership. Technology is an integral part of the work, with regular use of Microsoft Project, Procore, Autodesk tools, and the Microsoft Office Suite to manage schedules, documentation, and communication. The overall atmosphere values talent, performance, and a team-first approach, with a philosophy of hiring the right people and building the business around them.
