About this role

Requisition ID: 276935

Join a purpose driven winning team, committed to results, in an inclusive and high-performing culture.

The Role:

As a Senior Engineering Manager on Scotiabank’s Data & AI Technology team, you will lead an engineering team responsible for designing, building, and operating secure, resilient, and scalable enterprise platforms and products. This is a hands-on engineering leadership role: you will actively write and review production code, prototype solutions, troubleshoot complex issues, and contribute directly to critical technical outcomes while managing and developing the team. You will combine strong technical judgement with people leadership and delivery accountability; setting engineering direction, managing execution and operational risk, and partnering across product, architecture, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and business teams. Experience with data platforms and exposure to data management disciplines such as metadata inventory, lineage, quality, governance, and secure data use will help you guide solutions in this domain, but the role is fundamentally accountable for engineering excellence and organizational outcomes.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

- Lead, grow, and retain high-performing engineering teams, including engineering managers and senior technical leaders; set clear expectations, coach performance, build succession plans, and create an inclusive culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

- Remain hands-on in the full-stack codebase (ReactJS + Java) by designing and implementing production solutions, developing prototypes and reference implementations, reviewing pull requests, improving tests and automation, and debugging complex application and platform issues. Balance direct technical contribution with effective delegation and team leadership.

- Provide technical direction, leading critical design decisions, managing cross-team dependencies, and resolving complex engineering trade-offs.

- Be accountable for predictable delivery and measurable outcomes, using engineering metrics to manage portfolio health, capacity, quality, risk, technical debt, and progress against commitments.

- Drive engineering excellence across the software lifecycle through secure-by-design development, automated testing, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, performance engineering, production readiness, incident management, and service-level objectives.

- Guide the design and operation of cloud-native applications, APIs, distributed services, event-driven integrations, data-processing workloads, and reusable platform capabilities that serve enterprise-scale needs.

- Manage production health and operational risk, lead response to material incidents, ensure durable remediation, and communicate service health, risks, decisions, and investment needs to senior stakeholders.

- Influence engineering practices beyond the immediate team by contributing to enterprise standards, talent development, technology strategy, reuse, and communities of practice.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

- 7+ years leading engineering organizations that deliver and operate enterprise-scale, production-grade software, platforms, or distributed systems in complex and regulated environments.

- Demonstrated success managing managers, or senior engineers, with strength in talent assessment, coaching, performance management, workforce planning, succession, and organizational design.

- Strong, current coding proficiency and technical depth in modern software engineering, with demonstrated ability to design, build, test, review, and troubleshoot production-grade solutions. Experience should include cloud architecture, APIs and microservices, distributed and event-driven systems, security, resiliency, automated testing, and scalable integration patterns.

- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure or GCP, containerized workloads, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, reliability engineering, production support, and cost-conscious platform operations.

- Proven ability to establish technical strategy and engineering standards, evaluate architecture and build-versus-buy trade-offs, manage technical debt, and guide modernization across a portfolio of services.

- Strong delivery and operational management capability, including roadmap execution, capacity and dependency management, risk controls, engineering metrics, incident leadership, and continuous improvement.

- Ability to influence senior technology and business stakeholders, communicate complex decisions with clarity, and build alignment across organizational boundaries without relying solely on direct authority.
