You will apply advanced risk analysis, financial judgement and underwriting expertise to support balanced decisions that meet client needs while protecting long-term profitability.

What you will be doing:

- Lead highly technical and specialized renewals, quotes, plan revisions and client requests end-to-end, resolving independently and escalating only when required.
- Apply expert-level risk analysis, financial evaluation and underwriting judgement to assess complex, high-value and non-standard cases, determining appropriate pricing, financial and contractual conditions while balancing growth, profitability and client needs.
- Present clear insights and recommendations, translating data, analytics and underwriting rationale into actionable business decisions.
- Act as a strategic partner to Business Development, building trusted relationships and using strategic influence to support client management, align stakeholders and lead high-value negotiations.
- Provide insight and creative solutions to help solve complex client issues related to risk, pricing and the cost of their group benefits plan.
- Coach and mentor underwriters by sharing technical knowledge, supporting sound judgement, promoting consistent underwriting practices, and supporting their progress by performing thorough peer reviews.
- Support underwriting transformation initiatives, including new tools, process improvements, pilots and opportunities to leverage analytics, AI and underwriting technology as decision support.
- Champion continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, client experience, and outcomes and by participating and contributing in continuous improvement initiatives.
- Model accountability, professionalism, and ethical standards while contributing to a positive, inclusive team culture.

What you need to succeed:

- Extensive Group Underwriting experience, with demonstrated ability to independently manage complex risk decisions end-to-end.
- Senior-level underwriting expertise with strong proficiency in all financial arrangements, excellent client and business acumen to connect underwriting decisions to support business development and profitability objectives.
- Excellent numerical, mathematical and analytical skills, including the ability to use underwriting systems, reporting tools and Excel to analyze trends and support data-driven decisions.
- A thoughtful approach to decision making with the ability to apply judgement to unique, complex and non-standard situations.
- A solutions mindset where you can balance profitability, growth, risk and client experience.
- Proven negotiation, strategic influencing and relationship-management skills, including the ability to align stakeholders through complex client and partner discussions.
- Master Sun Life’s products and services, underwriting guidelines, systems and tools, pricing methodologies, marketplace dynamics and the regulatory environment.
- Ability to contribute to or lead projects and large-scale initiatives, including major renewals, quotes, process improvements or transformation efforts.
- Experience working with advanced underwriting tools, analytics and AI-enabled insights, with the ability to support adoption and coach others on effective use.
- Excellent interpersonal collaboration and teamwork skills, including a strong aptitude for coaching, mentoring and sharing knowledge.
- Ability to clearly explain decisions and recommendations, both written and verbal, and articulate complex underwriting concepts, in a way that builds confidence and credibility.
- Highly organized with excellent time management skills, professionalism and a commitment to high-quality work and service excellence.
- Bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for frequent interactions with French and English-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada.
