Your role
As Canada’s national public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada is committed to reflecting Canada’s diversity in its workforce, as well as across all of its platforms.
CBC Saskatchewan is looking for a creative, innovative, collaborative and independent-thinking journalist/producer for a unique role as associate producer for the content diversification and creator network unit. This is a full-time, permanent position based in Regina or Saskatoon (open to candidates in either location)
This position is different from any other in Saskatchewan’s newsroom. Reporting to a senior producer, you will work with independent video creators, producing strong original stories that will find audiences on multiple emerging platforms. This work will push the boundaries of our storytelling, focusing on new, diverse perspectives and experiences, told in innovative ways with the goal to draw in new audiences. While the majority of your time will be spent working with and developing video storytelling projects with emerging creators, your job will also include bringing those stories to the audience, on multiple emerging platforms, to reach the audience where they are. From pitch to publication, you’ll strive to find homes for these diverse perspectives and stories at CBC Saskatchewan and across CBC, while fostering a community of creators and continuing to build this network.
Your strengths are both in imaginative storytelling and developing relationships with potential freelance creators, sources and audience members to develop projects that are firmly rooted in this community but that are also surprising to our audience. You are able to encourage and build momentum with emerging storytellers, bringing in their unique perspectives, while communicating the need to balance this with journalistically rigorous storytelling.
Strong journalism, storytelling and relationship-building skills are needed, as well as an ability to write and edit. Video skills are an asset, but an interest in learning new ways of video storytelling is more important, alongside a genuine interest in exploring digital storytelling tools.
An interest in mentoring and interacting with those outside the CBC is key, as well as a strong ability to communicate and share your work internally. An independent-thinker who can juggle multiple projects on multiple timelines is essential. Knowledge of contracting and rights issues is an asset.
As the primary associate producer for this unit in Saskatchewan, you will also pitch original ideas that connect with the community, seek diverse perspectives and new creators as well as innovative treatments that help stories resonate with new audiences. You will work collaboratively with a small team based in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. You will assist in developing digital content including researching, writing, editing, organizing shoots and reviewing freelancer work as needed. You will balance your work managing creator’s projects with content diversification or first person stories, on different deadlines. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or show policies, practices and standards, but initiative and independent judgment are required.
Key Tasks include:
- Seek out, connect and build relationships with emerging independent creators and talent from diverse and digital communities, mentor and guide them from pitch to publication and create a sense of belonging for them within the CBC.
- Throughout the process, provide creative feedback and notes while communicating CBC’s journalistic principles and business and rights practices, ensuring that bar is met before publication.
- Assist in developing content including idea generating, chasing of voices, writing, researching, editing, preparing questioning, setting up shoots, fact-checking, developing the writing or ideas of others
- Assist in packaging Creator Network stories for multiple platforms as they evolve, including writing web articles, radio and tv scripts, YouTube titles and thumbnails, and producing social media content, as well as managing internal communications around publication.
- Contribute ideas for content and suggestions for treatment of original, compelling, diverse and people-focussed content diversification stories in Saskatchewan.
- Potential to gather audio-visual material including interviews, video and photographs to enhance digital, print, and social media platforms as required.
- Potential to plan and execute community outreach events or other engagement-focused happenings that enhance the creator community and CBC’s role in it, or that generally address gaps in our coverage. This could include hosting screenings, workshops, meet-and-greets, speaking at journalism and film schools/ programs, and representing CBC at local film events and festivals.
- Develop and maintain contacts in a range of diverse communities around the region.
- Manage multiple projects on different timelines.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively across multiple departments and outside CBC.
- Act as a CBC ambassador in Saskatchewan’s production and creative communities.
- Adhere to the Journalistic Standards and Practices of the CBC, some familiarity with media agreements, Business & Rights, budgets.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
- University degree or equivalent
- Five years’ practical and relevant experience, including some experience with collaborating in creative partnerships and content production
- An understanding of local journalism, and the tools needed to produce it
- A deep understanding of how to work with creatives from all walks of life, effectively communicating journalism, business and rights and other storytelling needs, while collaborating on unique, diverse, surprising and creative finished products
- A strong sense of journalistic storytelling with an awareness of contemporary political, economic, cultural and social issues of importance to this community, paired with a good understanding of the needs of a diverse Saskatchewan audience
- A deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience and the ability to tell stories from those perspectives – whatever that looks like.
- Must have strong creative judgement, initiative and a high degree of responsibility for the quality of work throughout the complete production cycle as well as publication, as well as the ability to provide imaginative and effective solutions, suggestions and feedback.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, along with the ability to work under tight deadlines with multiple priorities interacting with different teams across the organization.
- Strong critical thinking skills (familiarity with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices is essential).
- Excellent writing, editing, video producing and other digital storytelling skills
- Able to keep track of a number of simultaneous activities and projects and prioritize and plan, and to keep enthusiasm and momentum going on projects that can take months and evolve over time.
- Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, creative and original people-focussed story ideas and treatments with the goal of reaching new audience
- Ability to seek out new voices and freelancers and develop relationships with audience members and potential collaborators
- Knowledge of the digital space and trends as well as social media
- A demonstrated connection to diverse communities within the Saskatchewan area as well as a commitment to producing journalism for audiences that are often underserved and/or underrepresented.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and outreach skills, along with the ability to work under tight deadlines with multiple priorities interacting with different teams across the organization.
- Ability to give effective feedback and coach emerging content.
