About this role

Description

Join a Growing Team and Tackle Some of the Industry's Most Complex Environmental Claims

Liberty Mutual is expanding our Environmental Claims team and seeking an experienced Environmental Claims Professional to manage high-exposure environmental, pollution, toxic tort, and mass litigation claims within our Commercial Specialty Lines portfolio! This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned claims professional who thrives in complex coverage and liability analysis, enjoys collaborating with legal and industry experts, and is looking to make a meaningful impact at a Fortune 100 carrier known for its financial strength, innovation, and commitment to customer advocacy. In this role of Senior Technical Claims Specialist, you will exercise significant judgment and ownership throughout the entire claim lifecycle, from coverage analysis and investigation through litigation management, negotiation, and resolution. You'll partner closely with policyholders, brokers, reinsurers, underwriting, and defense counsel while helping shape outcomes on some of our most challenging and technically sophisticated claims.

Why this role

You’ll own complex environmental casualty claims from first notice through resolution, with real authority to decide coverage, set reserves, negotiate, and settle. This is not a hand-off role. You’ll make the calls, direct the strategy, and be recognized internally as a subject matter expert on pollution and specialty coverage issues.

What you’ll do

- Own the claim end to end. Determine coverage, investigate, assess liability, set and adjust reserves, evaluate exposure, negotiate settlements, and authorize payment. You’ll also have the authority to deny claims when the facts and policy language support it.

- Drive litigation strategy. Review pleadings, claim files, and investigation materials, then set the plan to resolve each suit, including coverage positions, amounts owed, discovery plans, and negotiation approach.

- Build the right team for each matter. Based on the allegations, assemble the working group of Home Office Legal, defense counsel, and Home Office Claims, and bring in technical resources such as environmental consultants where needed.

- Manage outside counsel. Oversee defense counsel’s strategy, practices, and billing so spend stays aligned with outcomes.

- Protect the claim and the data. Maintain the integrity of financial processing and the security of confidential information in claim files.

- Mentor and partner. Coach colleagues and serve as the claims liaison to Underwriting, Reinsurance, and other business partners.

- Stay ahead of the law. Track legislation, court decisions, and trends affecting pollution and other specialty coverages, and advise Claims Management on any impact to claims policies and procedures.

- Contribute beyond your desk. Participate in special projects that shape how the team works.

What we offer

- Meaningful settlement authority and ownership of your files

- Complex, high-impact work with direct access to Legal, Underwriting, and Reinsurance

- Opportunities to mentor others and grow into subject matter expert or leadership roles

- Flexible work arrangements. Liberty Mutual follows hybrid work arrangements and team members within a 50-mile radius of one of our hub offices (Westborough, MA; Boston, MA; Weatogue, CT; Suwanee, GA; Plano, TX; Hoffman Estates, IL; Indianapolis, IN; Lake Oswego, OR; Las Vegas, NV; Chandler, AZ) are expected to work from the office approximately two times per month. We will also consider highly qualified remote candidates who do not reside near a hub location.
