About Heidelberg Materials

Heidelberg Materials is one of the world’s largest suppliers of building materials, providing cement, aggregates, ready mixed concrete, and engineered solutions. We operate over 450 locations across North America with approximately 9,000 employees.

Position Summary

The Mine Technician will support the development, commissioning, and operation of a new underground limestone mine.  During the construction and start-up phase, the role will focus on survey control establishment, data collection systems, operational readiness activities, and technical support for mine development.

Once operational, the Mine Technician will provide field and office support for mine surveying, ventilation monitoring, production tracking, geological and geotechnical data collection, quality control sampling, mapping, and engineering projects.  Working closely with mine operations, maintenance personnel, and engineering staff, this position will help ensure accurate mine data, safe operating conditions, and efficient production practices throughout the operation.

Key Responsibilities

- Support the development, commissioning, and operation of a new underground room-and-pillar limestone mine.
- Conduct underground and surface surveying activities, including survey control, development surveys, production surveys, as-built mapping, and stockpile measurements.
- Assist with the collection, verification, and management of survey, geological, geotechnical, ventilation, and production data.
- Maintain mine plans, maps, drawings, and databases to ensure accurate and up-to-date operational records.
- Perform ventilation monitoring and assist with airflow surveys, environmental monitoring, and regulatory compliance activities.
- Support ground control programs through underground inspections, data collection, condition monitoring, and documentation.
- Track mine development and production performance and prepare routine operational reports and performance metrics.
- Conduct raw material quality control sampling and support grade management programs, including the collection, documentation, and tracking of limestone samples to ensure compliance with raw material specifications and cement manufacturing requirements.
- Assist engineers and supervisors with mine planning, capital projects, continuous improvement initiatives, and operational studies.
- Operate and maintain surveying equipment, monitoring instruments, drones, and other technical field equipment as required.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements while promoting a culture of operational excellence.

Qualifications

- Diploma or Degree in Mining Engineering Technology, Mine Engineering Technology, Geological Technology, Surveying, Geomatics, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 2+ years of experience in mining, construction, surveying, geomatics, or a related technical field.
- Experience conducting field surveys and collecting technical data in industrial or mining environments.
- Proficiency with surveying equipment including total stations, GPS systems, laser scanners, or similar instruments.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and technical software applications.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across operational and technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in underground mining operations, preferably room-and-pillar mining.
- Experience using survey and CAD software.
- Experience using mine planning such as Deswik, Carlson, AutoCAD, Vulcan, Surpac, or similar platforms considered a plus.
- Familiarity with underground ventilation monitoring and ground control practices.
- Experience with drone surveying, laser scanning, photogrammetry, or geospatial data management.
- Understanding of geological mapping, sampling, and quarry or mine quality control programs.

Work Environment

- Primarily quarry-based with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and physical demands. PPE is required.
- Includes work in underground environments as the quarry transitions to underground operations.
- Relocation to the Cadomin/Hinton or surrounding area is required for this role. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a regular on-site presence. Fly-In/Fly-Out arrangements are not available; however, a relocation assistance package is provided to support a smooth transition to the community.
