About this role
About Actor
Actor builds autonomous systems for heavy machinery operating in quarries, mines, and construction sites. With 150+ active deployments, Actor is scaling its universal sensing and compute platform to thousands of machines in the harshest field environments on earth.
The Opportunity
Actor is looking for a Forward Deployed Engineer to take robot models from the shop to real heavy machinery at quarries, mines, and construction sites. You have worked with data and written code for real robots or vehicles, and you want to own hard problems end to end.
With 150+ deployments live and a small team, Actor needs high-agency engineers who will build the data and autonomy infrastructure that makes operator-trained robot models useful in the field. This is a founding-team role in a fast, horizontal shop where everyone owns a problem.
What You'll Do
- Keep a fleet of 150+ machine deployments healthy: debug nodes that go down, dig through logs, and work with on-site deployment staff to resolve issues in the field
- Build reliable data infrastructure so no frames are lost, from machine capture and upload to the cloud through to labeling and model training pipelines
- Manage in-house and external labeling teams and run evaluations on newly trained robot models
- Write robotics software that controls autonomous machines and get autonomy data into customer-facing portals and dashboards
- Work from the Mountain View industrial shop, with up to 2 long-distance trips per month to deploy hardware and build autonomy solutions at customer sites
You Should Have
- 2+ years of experience in a deployed software or robotics engineering role
- Experience writing code for real robots or vehicles
- Hands-on experience working with data pipelines and infrastructure
- High agency: comfortable owning hard problems end to end
- Willingness to travel to customer sites (up to 2 trips per month)
