About this role

DNV Energy Systems is seeking a Senior Process Engineer to join our low-carbon team. In this role, you will work with a group of process engineers, supporting other colleagues in identifying customizable solutions to clients’ challenges in their energy transition endeavors. Your contributions will help maintain DNV’s know-how around low carbon fuels, and LNG as a fuel and feed to other processes. This know-how will readily respond to clients’ requests in a fast-paced environment.

DNV – Energy Systems –Low Carbon Services aspires to become the preferred business partner to support customers in mitigating their risks by providing high-quality due diligence studies focusing on a) green/blue hydrogen production and its integration to a supply chain or the production of derivatives such as ammonia, methanol or synthetic fuels. b) LNG production value chain and c) utilization of natural gas for power applications combined with CCS. Among the opportunities that a process engineer in the team will deliver are process modeling of several scales of a facility depending on the customer’s requirements and the preparation of Front-end Loading (FEL) documents from the identification of the opportunity (FEL 0) to Select (FEL 2).

This role can be based in Seattle, WA; Houston, TX; Oakland, CA; Medford, MA; Portland, OR offices, presenting a dynamic hybrid schedule where employees will typically spend three (3) days per week working from either a DNV office or client location/site. Further details regarding role-specific requirements will be shared during the interview process.

The position may also be considered at other DNV offices within the continental U.S.

What You’ll Do

- Perform technical due diligence on processes for producing and using hydrogen, including processes to make hydrogen-derived products such as methanol, ammonia, synthetic fuels, LNG, and power generation with carbon capture and sequestration.
- Being able to scale down processes and their corresponding cost estimates matching customers’ interests work in designing and optimizing production processes of different scales
- Leverage a deep understanding of low-carbon technologies and process modeling to predict and deliver scenarios supporting the customer's strategic decision-making process
- Develop, lead, and coordinate mass and energy balance methodologies to assess end-use applications' technical and economic impacts
- Contribute to the know-how building and knowledge management of the Process Engineering team
- Support business development by leading and participation in the preparation of proposals.
- Manage work related activities for multiple projects and proposals in a fast-paced environment
- Review billion-dollar capital project documentation in several maturation levels such as FEL-2, FEL-3, and Construction to comment on information completeness.
- Design processes using process modeling tools to produce a list of major equipment for preparation of a Cost Estimate Class 4 as per AACE.

What Is Required

- Minimum Master's degree (M.Sc.) in Chemical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline, or higher
- Minimum five years of relevant experience in process engineering with exposure to process modeling with tools such as UniSim or Aspen HYSYS. Ability to develop chemical processes models from scratch. Experience with only review of process models will not be considered.
- Experience with making/preparing process/system design, including PFS, PEFS, PFDs, P&IDs, and the ability to design equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge level for reading and preparing these diagrams with tools such as MS Visio and/or AutoCAD and/or equivalent.
- Experience as a team member in capital projects through the several stages of project development including Front-End Loading (FEL) stages from FEL 0 to FEL 3, construction, commissioning and operations.
- Ability to prepare cost estimates (Class 5 to Class 4 as per AACE).
- Ability to estimate life cycle greenhouse emissions and able to use standard LCA tools.
- Knowledge about hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, synthetic fuels processes, LNG and CCS.
- Master competence level in Process Safety.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical information to subject and non-subject matter experts.
