About this role
Tesla’s Industrial Products team is looking for a Staff Product Manager to own the next-generation medium-voltage power electronics platform used across battery energy storage, utility-scale solar, and SI data center applications worldwide.
This product consolidates medium-voltage power conversion, protection, and control into a single factory-engineered cabinet — a solid-state transformer (SST) inverter with integrated solid-state circuit protection. It replaces a conventional medium-voltage transformer, switchgear / ring main unit, and discrete power conversion system. The same hardware family is configured as a utility-scale solar inverter and as a data center power supply unit that converts medium-voltage AC to high-density rack-level DC.
You will define product requirements across those applications, drive the roadmap, and work with hardware engineering, firmware, sales, and operations to bring world-class MV solutions to market at global scale.
- Own the product roadmap and strategy for Tesla’s medium-voltage power electronics (MVPE) platform — covering the battery energy storage MV interface, the utility-scale solar inverter, and the data center power supply unit
- Define product requirements and performance targets for SST inverters: MV AC voltage, DC bus window, power rating, protection, thermal performance, and firmware behavior
- Serve as the internal subject matter expert on medium-voltage power electronics, solid-state transformers, solid-state circuit breakers, interconnection, and how SST inverters displace conventional PCS + MV transformer + switchgear stacks
- For utility-scale solar: define requirements for a stand-alone MV solar inverter, including AC-coupled solar-plus-storage at medium voltage, plant-level controls, and grid-code ride-through
- For data centers: engage hyperscalers, colocation providers, and design-build firms on MV AC to 800 V DC rack distribution, power density, fault containment, and integration with storage, on-site generation, and the campus electrical system
- Quantify customer value versus legacy architectures — footprint, install time, conversion efficiency, CapEx vs. OpEx, power density, and PUE — and turn those into positioning, configuration strategy, and business cases
- Partner with power-electronics, embedded-firmware, EMS / SCADA, mechanical, and manufacturing teams around a unified release plan. Co-define control features such as grid-forming, black start, reactive power / Volt-VAR, anti-islanding, voltage ride-through, and remote diagnostics
- Ensure electrical, thermal, and firmware designs meet applicable IEEE, IEC, UL, and NEC
- Collaborate with global sales and applications engineering on regional MV voltage classes, grounding and protection schemes, and configuration strategy. Support proposals, value models, and technical collateral versus legacy UPS / transformer and central-inverter + MVT architectures
- Drive the product through concept, design, qualification, launch, and commercialization. Develop datasheets, application guides, specifications, and training materials for internal and external audiences
- 5+ years in medium-voltage power electronics, electrical engineering, or energy infrastructure — with recent hands-on exposure to inverters, solid-state transformers, PCS, or MV conversion hardware
- Deep understanding of bidirectional inverter design and grid-support functions (grid-forming, reactive power / Volt-VAR, anti-islanding, black start, frequency response, voltage ride-through)
- Working knowledge of MV systems: <36 kV AC classes, grounding and fault protection, solid-state and conventional circuit breakers, switchgear / ring main units, and interconnection
- Direct exposure to at least one of: utility-scale solar inverters (central or medium-voltage), or data-center power architectures (MV distribution, 800 V DC, UPS / PDU, hyperscale electrical design). Experience across both is a strong plus
- Background in product management, applications engineering, or sales engineering in the MV, power-electronics, solar, or data-center power space
- Comfort building customer ROI / TCO models and making trade-off decisions across customer value, technical feasibility, and time-to-market
- Strong ability to translate technical requirements into product decisions and communicate clearly across hardware engineering, firmware, commercial, and executive teams
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical field, or equivalent experience
- Experience working across multiple regulatory environments and global markets preferred
- Passion for accelerating the energy transition and enabling large-scale solar, storage, and AI infrastructure
