About this role
Job Title: CNC Programmer Job Description This role suits an experienced 5-axis CNC milling programmer and machinist who takes full ownership of projects from initial concept through to production handoff. You will program, set up, run, and prove out complex parts, incorporating feedback from quality and first article inspections to refine processes. The position requires a hands-on professional who is equally comfortable at the machine and at the programming station, ensuring robust, repeatable processes for production. Responsibilities
- Own CNC milling projects from initial programming through to final handoff to production.
- Program 5-axis and 4-axis vertical machining centers, with a strong preference for using Mastercam.
- Set up machines, including creating and maintaining detailed setup sheets and tool lists.
- Run CNC machines to prove out programs and validate machining processes.
- Perform first article prove-outs, verify part conformity, and adjust programs based on quality and inspection feedback.
- Troubleshoot machining issues at the machine, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
- Refine and optimize toolpaths, feeds, speeds, and fixturing to improve efficiency, quality, and repeatability.
- Collaborate with manufacturing engineering staff and machinists to resolve issues and improve processes.
- Support the transition of proven processes to production, ensuring clear documentation and smooth handoff.
- Work independently with minimal supervision, managing time and priorities to meet deadlines.
Essential Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with 5-axis CNC milling and vertical machining centers.
- Proficiency in CNC programming, ideally using Mastercam.
- Demonstrated ability to run CNC machines, not only program them.
- Experience creating setup sheets and comprehensive tool lists.
- First article and prove-out experience, including validating and refining programs at the machine.
- CNC setup and operating experience, with a solid understanding of machining fundamentals.
- Comfort troubleshooting machining and programming issues directly at the machine.
- Ability to work self-sufficiently with minimal hand-holding.
- Background in machining, preferably starting as a machinist and progressing into programming.
- Focus on milling applications; candidates whose experience is primarily lathe-based are not the target for this role.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Fixture design and fixturing experience, considered a strong plus.
- Experience with 4-axis machining in addition to 5-axis capability.
- Prior experience as a machinist, providing a practical foundation for programming decisions.
- Strong communication skills to work effectively with machinists, manufacturing engineering technicians, and engineering staff.
- Ability to document processes clearly, including setup instructions, tool lists, and program notes.
- Continuous improvement mindset, with an interest in refining processes for efficiency and quality.
Work Environment This is a fully on-site role in a hands-on manufacturing environment focused on CNC machining. You will work closely with a small programming team of three programmers and collaborate with manufacturing engineering technicians who serve as intermediaries between machinists and front-office manufacturing engineers. These technicians act as the first line of defense for troubleshooting machine issues, creating a supportive environment for resolving problems quickly. The setting centers around 5-axis and 4-axis vertical machining centers, with Mastercam as a primary programming tool. The culture emphasizes collaboration between the shop floor and engineering, practical problem-solving at the machine, and clear communication to ensure smooth production workflows.
