About this role
About Scrumconnect Consulting
Scrumconnect Consulting is a multi-award-winning digital consultancy, recognised for delivering impactful and innovative technology solutions across UK government departments. Our work has positively influenced the lives of over 40 million UK citizens.
We are passionate about user-centred design, agile delivery, and building digital services that make a real difference. Our teams work at the forefront of innovation, helping organisations transform and deliver high-quality, scalable solutions that truly matter.
The Role
We're looking for a hands-on Senior Developer to maintain, improve and modernise a national digital service used by citizens, learning providers and operational teams. You'll combine C# and .NET development with Azure troubleshooting, incident resolution and safe delivery into live services.
You'll work in a multidisciplinary team, balancing urgent service needs with planned features, technical upgrades and continuous improvement. You'll take work from investigation and refinement through implementation, testing, release and operational handover, working closely with architects, testers, DevOps, service management and other suppliers.
The Service Environment
The estate covers several public-facing services, shared APIs and data services, and a content management platform built on Orchard Core. The work also involves third-party integrations and the evolution and decommissioning of existing services.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and improve services: Deliver maintainable features, fixes and integrations across .NET applications, APIs, Azure Functions, shared libraries and CMS components.
- Resolve live service issues: Investigate incidents using logs, telemetry, code and data. Restore service safely, find root causes and deliver lasting fixes that reduce repeat incidents.
- Own delivery through to completion: Clarify requirements and acceptance criteria, estimate work, identify dependencies and risks early, and follow through on reviews, testing, deployment and handover.
- Support safe releases: Maintain release branches and technical notes, and support change requests, deployment checks, rollback preparation and post-release validation across development, SIT, pre-production and production.
- Modernise the estate: Support .NET and Orchard Core upgrades, dependency and security remediation, environment alignment, monitoring improvements and service decommissioning.
- Build quality into delivery: Review code, improve automated tests, work closely with QA on test evidence and regression coverage, and support performance and accessibility investigations.
- Improve team capability: Coach colleagues, document investigations and runbooks, share knowledge and automate recurring manual work. Contribute to sprint refinement, demos, retrospectives and quarterly planning.
What We're Looking For
We want demonstrated senior-level delivery and operational judgement. Strong foundations and the ability to learn the estate matter more than experience of every product listed.
Essential
- C# and modern .NET: Strong commercial experience with C#, ASP.NET Core and API development, including maintainable design, dependency injection, asynchronous processing, logging, exception handling and shared package dependencies.
- Azure application engineering: Hands-on experience developing and supporting Azure-hosted applications and Azure Functions, including application configuration, service integrations and diagnosis across distributed components.
- Production troubleshooting: Experience supporting business-critical services, using Application Insights or equivalent telemetry to trace failures, investigate performance, and distinguish between code, configuration, integration and data issues.
- APIs and data integration: Designing, consuming and troubleshooting HTTP APIs, including contracts, validation, error handling and compatibility. Able to investigate data imports, consistency issues and downstream dependencies.
- Data and caching: Practical database querying and data investigation, with experience of relational or document databases. Understanding of caching, invalidation, data lifecycle and the risks of changing production data.
- Git and delivery pipelines: Confident with branching, merging, pull requests and release and hotfix management, including GitFlow or an equivalent controlled strategy. Experience with Azure DevOps or comparable CI/CD tooling.
- Testing and release assurance: Writing and maintaining unit and integration tests, supporting regression and API testing, and working with testers to produce meaningful evidence. Understanding of deployment verification, rollback and controlled change.
- Secure and supportable engineering: Applying secure coding principles, protecting secrets, using environment-specific configuration correctly and fixing vulnerable dependencies. Building changes that can be monitored, diagnosed and supported.
- Existing codebases and upgrades: Able to understand unfamiliar services, analyse change impact, upgrade runtimes and dependencies, and deliver incremental improvements without disrupting live operations.
Desirable
- Azure services: Cosmos DB, SQL and stored procedures, Azure Search and indexing, Redis, API Management, Event Grid and Key Vault, managed identities, and event-driven or scheduled data processing.
- Content and web platforms: Orchard Core or another .NET CMS, GraphQL, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, GOV.UK Frontend, accessible user journeys and content publishing workflows.
- Engineering improvements: Infrastructure as code, such as ARM templates, environment and configuration drift analysis, BDD or browser test automation, performance testing support, and Power BI or data reporting integrations.
- Public service delivery: UK government digital services, GDS ways of working, ServiceNow or equivalent incident tooling, and collaboration across client and supplier teams.
