About you
The senior leadership position that acts as the "Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Head of the Program Management Office (PMO)" for PMI.
While other leads own what the strategy is (Portfolio Lead) or what the finances are (Finance Lead), the Global Programs Lead is accountable for how the work gets done consistently and effectively across the globe. You are the ultimate owner of the project and program delivery framework.
You manage the team of the Sr. Program Manager and Program Manager, ensuring You have the tools, training, and direction needed to execute Google's most complex real estate initiatives flawlessly. You are obsessed with delivery excellence, process adherence, and resource management.
In this role, you will…
- Review the 'Master Program Health' Dashboard: This is their top-level view. It rolls up the status from all the Sr. Program Managers. You are not looking at individual project risks; You are looking for systemic issues. You notice that "Permitting Delays" is now the #1 risk category across 30% of their projects in North America.
- Lead the 'Program & Resource Allocation' Meeting: Host a weekly meeting with their Sr. Program Managers. A new, massive, and highly confidential program ("Project Chimera") has just been initiated. The Global Programs Lead must decide which Sr. PM is best suited to lead it and how to re-balance the workloads of the other teams to free them up.
- Meet with the GRE Controls & CoE Lead: Discuss the "Permitting Delays" trend. You decide to task the Controls Lead with doing a deep-dive analysis and developing a new "Permitting Risk Mitigation" checklist to be added to the playbook
- Attend the PMI Leadership Council: As a key member, You are there to represent the "delivery function." You report on the overall health of the project pipeline and present the business case for the resource re-allocation needed for "Project X.
- Resolve a Senior Resource Conflict: Two different Sr. Program Managers have escalated that You both need the single "Sr. Financial Advisor" for their critical projects next week. The Global Programs Lead is the one who makes the final call, prioritizing one project over the other based on strategic importance and communicating the decision back to the teams.
- Review the Agenda for the Deal Review Committee (DRC): As the ultimate owner of the program team that presents to the DRC, You review the upcoming agenda to ensure their team is fully prepared and that the projects being presented are strategically sound and ready for executive review.
- 1:1 with a Sr. Program Manager: Coach one of their direct reports on how to better manage a particularly difficult stakeholder within a Google business unit, providing advice and offering to step in if needed.
- Lead the 'Program Management Community of Practice': Host a monthly call for all Sr. PMs and PMs. Today's topic is a 'lessons learned' session from a recently completed project in India that finished ahead of schedule. The goal is to dissect what went right and turn it into a best practice for the entire team.
- Excellence: To build and lead a world-class program management organization that has the talent, skills, and capacity to deliver Google's most complex projects on time and on budget.
- Predictability: To ensure that the execution of all programs is consistent, predictable, and transparent, giving senior leadership confidence in the delivery forecast.
- Integration: To act as the key integration point at the program level, making sure that the "orchestration mechanics" of the PMI model work smoothly in practice.
- Improvement: To make the entire program delivery engine faster, leaner, and more effective over time by learning from both successes and failures.
