About this role
The National Tax Leader will lead the growth, profitability, and overall success of Savant Accounting and Business Advisorys (SABA) national tax practice. Reporting to the Head of SABA, this leader will align regional teams, develop consistent service and quality standards, and drive growth across the firm.
This is a coach-first, player-coach role that combines strategic leadership with hands-on client service. The National Tax Leader will lead and develop Regional Directors, scale the national practice, strengthen partnerships across Savant, and maintain a select portfolio of high-value client relationships.
The National Tax Leader will focus in the following areas:
Practice Leadership & Standards
- Own the firms tax service methodology and standard operating procedures; drive one consistent way of delivering tax compliance, tax planning, and tax research & consulting across all regions.
- Set pricing standards and rate floors for the national tax practice, and hold Regional Directors accountable for managing to them.
- Own the tax quality-review framework and standards. Set the bar and hold the practice accountable; deep technical execution and review are governed through the Regional Directors and the firms technical resources.
- Establish and maintain a technical resource / quality spine (strong RD bench and/or a national technical lead) sufficient to uphold the standards this role sets.
Regional Leadership & People Development
- Directly lead the firms Regional Directors (currently four regions: Heartland, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern), running the regional tax practices through them and ensuring alignment with firm goals, culture, and vision.
- Develop, mentor, and hold accountable Regional Directors and high-potential tax leaders; oversee capacity planning, staffing, and key hiring across the national tax practice.
- Support succession planning and build the leadership bench beneath the RD layer.
Financial & Practice Performance
- Carry and own the national tax practice P&L. Each Regional Director remains accountable for their regional P&L; those roll up to the National Tax Leader for the practice total.
- Drive national tax practice performance against SABAs core metrics — Net New Revenue (NNR), contribution margin, and unit value growth — with contribution margin and NNR as primary.
- Monitor supporting KPIs including realization / effective rate, utilization, quality outcomes, and staff development; guide L&D and practice-wide productivity.
Client Contribution & Business Development
- Maintain a focused book of senior, high-value client relationships (targeted at roughly one-third of capacity), weighted toward relationship leadership and business development rather than hands-on preparation.
- Represent SABAs tax practice with priority clients, advisors, and centers of influence; support retention and address significant service risks.
Growth & Cross-Serving
- Enable and equip cross-serving between the tax practice and Wealth Advisors under the firms hub-and-spoke model; make it easy for advisors to identify and hand off tax opportunities.
- Partner with SABA growth leadership and the advisor community to build repeatable, packaged tax offerings that scale across offices.
- Clarify and reinforce the SABA / TST relationship for advisors as it applies to tax.
Strategic Leadership & Collaboration
- Contribute to firm-wide strategy as a senior member of SABA leadership; translate strategic goals into national tax initiatives and drive execution.
- Promote unified processes, standards, and culture across all tax offices; partner with Operations and firm leaders to standardize best practices.
- Support the firms technology and transformation agenda (e.g., practice-management and tax-platform transitions) as it affects the tax practice.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directly oversee and lead the firms Regional Directors and, through them, the national tax practice. This includes hiring, assigning work, and recommending salary increases, promotions, transfers, demotions, and/or terminations.
- Champion a constructive culture and lead by example, promoting an environment where employees are accountable, motivated by success, supported in taking initiative, and recognized for their achievements.
- Select, supervise, coach, develop, and retain a team of qualified leaders through effective hiring, development, performance management, and a clear succession plan.
- Establish clear performance measures for the team and individuals, communicate them, and provide fair, constructive, and timely feedback.
- Align team objectives and individual metrics with organizational strategic goals.
- Model exemplary conduct, upholding the highest ethical and legal standards and Savants policies, procedures, and core values.
Qualifications
The National Tax Leader position typically requires the following qualifications:
Education & Credentials
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Masters in Taxation or related masters degree preferred.
- Active CPA or EA license required
Experience — Required

- Demonstrated ability to lead senior technical professionals and leaders, and to set and enforce standards across a distributed practice.
- A credible, current senior practitioner able to carry high-value client relationships and represent the firm at the most senior level.
- Willingness to travel across regions as needed (potentially up to (25-40%), including overnight stays; schedule flexibility is essential.
Experience — Preferred
- Breadth across tax compliance, planning, and research & consulting, with depth in pass-through / business taxation and high-net-worth individual tax.
- Experience in a wealth- or financial-services–integrated environment, and familiarity with cross-serving between tax and wealth.
- Track record building and scaling a practice through both organic growth and M&A integration.
- Proficiency with modern tax and practice-management technology; comfort leading through platform transitions.
