About this role

At Caris, we understand that cancer is an ugly word—a word no one wants to hear, but one that connects us all. That’s why we’re not just transforming cancer care—we’re changing lives.

We introduced precision medicine to the world and built an industry around the idea that every patient deserves answers as unique as their DNA. Backed by cutting-edge molecular science and AI, we ask ourselves every day:   “What would I do if this patient were my mom?”   That question drives everything we do.

But our mission doesn’t stop with cancer. We're pushing the frontiers of medicine and leading a revolution in healthcare—driven by innovation, compassion, and purpose.

Join us in our mission to improve the human condition across multiple diseases. If you're passionate about meaningful work and want to be part of something bigger than yourself, Caris is where your impact begins.

Position Summary

Caris Life Sciences is one of the largest precision-oncology platforms in the world, serving hundreds of thousands of molecular cases a year and growing at double-digit rates. Behind every case is a matched molecular, imaging, and clinical-outcomes data estate few organizations anywhere can rival, and the clinical software that drives the lab's instruments and processes, captures results, and delivers each patient's report. A patient and an ordering physician are waiting on every one of those reports. The Engineering Manager leads one of the front-line teams that keep that software reliable and moving.

This assignment leads the engineering team for the report-generation and rendering estate together with the clinical rules engine, components whose outputs directly shape patient-care documents. The assignment carries heightened change-control rigor and close partnership with the report-path Product Manager and the quality and regulatory organizations.

The Engineering Manager - Clinical Software Products leads a front-line engineering team in Caris Life Sciences' Clinical Software Engineering organization, reporting to the Senior Director, Clinical Software Engineering. This is a player-coach position: the Engineering Manager owns delivery, quality, and operational health for an assigned platform team while staying technically engaged in design and code review. The platforms in scope are live, business-critical clinical systems under SOX financial controls and FDA regulatory requirements, and the Engineering Manager is directly accountable for the supervision, change-control discipline, and engineering standards those obligations demand.

The engineering environment is modern and funded: frontier AI coding assistants are standard-issue tooling, with agentic workflows across design, implementation, and test generation. Characterization tests and golden-master replay validation serve as executable evidence for regulated change. Delivery runs on CI/CD with application-level observability and risk-based release governance aligned with current FDA Computer Software Assurance guidance. Modernization of established systems is active, funded engineering work. The Engineering Manager runs the team on this model and is accountable for making automation-first practice its daily norm.

Job Responsibilities

- Manage a front-line team of software engineers: hiring, onboarding, performance management, coaching, and career development.
- Own delivery for the assigned platform: sprint planning, prioritization with the paired Product Manager, estimation, and predictable release execution under regulated change control.
- Remain technically engaged: participate in design and architecture reviews, perform code review at a meaningful cadence, and hold the team's engineering standards (testing, documentation, observability) to the level a SOX/FDA-gated estate requires.
- Run the team on an automation-first operating model: recurring manual engineering and operational work is a defect to engineer away, AI-assisted workflows are standard daily practice, and automated test and evidence coverage is a first-class delivery responsibility.
- Onboard engineers into the regulated environment, including structured knowledge transfer when a new team member absorbs existing platform scope.
- Partner with Application Site-Reliability Engineering on production readiness, incident response, and post-incident remediation for the assigned platform, keeping production access inside segregation-of-duties requirements.
- Maintain team health at a sustainable pace: balanced on-call/support load, managed work-in-progress, and early escalation of capacity risks.
- Bring team-level facts to quarterly capacity and hiring planning: throughput, support load, and skill coverage.
- Keep compliance moving at the pace of delivery: change-control records, review evidence, and documentation to SOX and FDA standards for all team output.
- Embed secure SDLC practices in the team: OWASP Top Ten awareness in design and code review, and penetration testing coordinated early in development.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 2+ years of direct people-management or formal team-lead responsibility for a production software team.
- Delivered and operated software subject to FDA, SOX, CLIA, HIPAA, or equivalent regulated-environment controls.
- Managed delivery with agile/scrum practices, including planning, estimation, and stakeholder communication.
- Hired and onboarded software engineers.
- Led teams that apply automation and AI-assisted engineering practices in daily delivery, including automated testing, CI/CD, and scripted operations.

Preferred Qualifications

- Worked in healthcare, clinical laboratory, diagnostics, or life sciences software environments.
- Demonstrated ability to stay technically engaged while managing: substantive contribution to design review, code review, and architectural decisions on a live production system.
- Stood up or reshaped a team while maintaining delivery continuity.
- Managed teams that operate production systems with formal on-call rotations.
- Familiarity with structured knowledge-transfer practices when teams absorb existing platform scope.

Physical Demands

- Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods.

Training

- All job-specific, safety, and compliance training is assigned based on the job functions associated with this employee.

Other

- This role may require periodic travel to other Caris sites or partner locations. After-hours response to emergency production issues and participation in escalation rotations may be required.

Conditions of Employment:   Individual must successfully complete pre-employment process, which includes criminal background check, drug screening, credit check   ( applicable for certain positions ) and reference verification.
