About the Team:
The Applications Development Intermediate Programmer Analyst is a technically sharp, detail-oriented professional who thrives at the intersection of systems automation, data engineering, and financial services technology. This role is purpose-built for a hands-on practitioner — someone who finds satisfaction in crafting elegant shell scripts, building reliable data pipelines, and engineering automation that keeps mission-critical financial systems running with precision and consistency. At Citi, technology is not a background function — it is the engine that powers financial services for over 200 million clients worldwide, and the engineers who build and maintain that engine are integral to our ability to operate at scale, speed, and with unwavering integrity.
In this role, the successful candidate will embed directly within cross-functional technology teams, partnering with developers, data engineers, and business analysts to deliver application enhancements, automate operational workflows, and resolve complex data challenges. You will bring a practitioner's mindset to every engagement — writing and debugging production-grade scripts, optimizing job scheduling configurations, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of financial data as it flows through critical reconciliation systems. Your work will have direct, measurable impact on the reliability and performance of systems that underpin Citi's global operations.
This is also a role where your expertise will matter beyond your own deliverables. You will serve as a subject matter resource for peers and junior analysts, sharing your technical knowledge and helping to raise the bar across the team. At Citi, we believe the best engineers make the people around them better — and this role is an opportunity to do exactly that, while continuing to grow your own craft in one of the world's most dynamic and consequential technology environments.
Responsibilities:
- Utilize knowledge of applications development procedures and concepts, and basic knowledge of other technical areas to identify and define necessary system enhancements, including using script tools and analyzing/interpreting code
- Consult with users, clients, and other technology groups on issues, and recommend programming solutions, install, and support customer exposure systems
- Apply fundamental knowledge of programming languages for design specifications
- Analyze applications to identify vulnerabilities and security issues, as well as conduct testing and debugging
- Serve as advisor or coach to new or lower level analysts
- Identify problems, analyze information, and make evaluative judgements to recommend and implement solutions
- Resolve issues by identifying and selecting solutions through the applications of acquired technical experience and guided by precedents
- Has the ability to operate with a limited level of direct supervision
- Can exercise independence of judgement and autonomy
- Acts as SME to senior stakeholders and/or other team members
- Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency

- Hands-on experience with relational database platforms such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL, including working knowledge of schemas, indexing, and query performance optimization
- Experience building and supporting ETL pipelines and data workflows using shell-based scripting and related automation tools, including end-to-end troubleshooting of data extraction, transformation, and loading processes
- Proficiency in Python scripting as a complement to shell-based workflows, with experience applying Python for data manipulation, file parsing, and automation tasks; proficiency in JSON parsing and processing within shell or Python scripts is a strong plus
- Experience with enterprise job scheduling platforms such as Autosys or Control-M, including configuration of shell script-driven jobs, dependency chains, calendar settings, and failure alerting
