Summary

Our Power and Drives team delivers practical electrification solutions for industrial customers and is expanding its product offering and technical capabilities. We are looking for an Application Specialist (Engineer/Technologist) whose primary responsibility is to turn sales opportunities into accurate, timely and commercially sound proposals. Outside sales typically originates the opportunities; the Application Specialist evaluates the technical fit, defines an appropriate solution, develops the quotation and owns the proposal workflow through submission. This is primarily a hands-on technical proposals and solutions quoting position.

Role and Responsibilities

- Assess incoming opportunities: Review single-line diagrams, engineering drawings, specifications, data sheets and bid documents to understand the application, define scope, identify gaps and determine whether the request aligns with our products and capabilities. Escalate unusual applications for input when required.

- Build complete quotations: Prepare technical submissions and commercial offers, including equipment selection, bills of material, vendor inputs, estimated costs, selling prices, margins, lead times, assumptions, exclusions and required bid documentation. Check accuracy and consistency before release.

- Manage the proposal workload: Own multiple active quotations, track actions and submission dates, prioritize competing demands, and communicate capacity or risks early. Balance work across the team with manager support while remaining accountable for assigned deadlines.

- Liaise and Coordinate where it adds value: Work directly with outside sales to qualify bid opportunities and establish pricing strategy. Seek support from product management, engineering, execution or account teams to confirm technical fit, scope, risks and commercial assumptions; contact customers as needed to clarify requirements.

- Develop application-specific solutions: Select and configure suitable equipment such as LV/MV switchgear, motor control centres, standalone or packaged VFD panels, and industrial AC motors. Compare viable approaches for technical suitability, value, cost and delivery.

Qualifications and Skills

- Degree or diploma in electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology or a related field; equivalent technical experience considered.

- Approximately 3–5 years of relevant industrial electrical, application engineering, estimating or technical quotation experience preferred.

- Confident reading and interpreting single-line diagrams, engineering drawings, specifications, equipment schedules and technical data sheets; strong spatial reasoning.

- Working familiarity with low- and medium-voltage power distribution and motor-control applications, including switchgear, MCCs, AC induction motors and VFDs.

- Comfort with bills of material, equipment selection, cost estimates, pricing, gross margin and technical/commercial proposal documentation.

- Independent time management, accuracy, sound judgment and clear communication in a collaborative, deadline-driven environment.

- Proficiency with Microsoft 365, especially Excel; ability to learn quotation, configuration and document-management tools.

Additional Assets

- Awareness of applicable CSA, UL, ANSI/IEEE, NEMA and IEC standards; examples include UL 1558, UL 845, UL 891, IEEE C37.20.2, NEMA MG 1 and IEC 61800.

- CAD, electrical design or 3D modelling familiarity; field experience with industrial electrical equipment.

- Experience using AI-assisted tools, scripting, data analysis, tool creation or workflow automation to improve accuracy and efficiency.

As part of our recruitment process, successful candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment security background check.

Spartan recognizes that there are many ways in which candidates develop knowledge, abilities, and competencies throughout their careers. We encourage applications from candidates with a variety of backgrounds and we do consider qualifications and competencies that are equivalent to those specifically mentioned above.
