About this role

Meta Reality Labs is seeking a motivated, self-driven, and passionate Product Design Engineering Intern for a role within its AI Glasses hardware team. The team develops wearable hardware that brings AI capabilities into everyday life. This role focuses on the mechanical design and integration of compact components and assemblies, balancing comfort, appearance, weight, durability, performance, and manufacturability.

As a Product Design Engineering Intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers to develop, analyze, prototype, and test mechanical designs and assemblies. With guidance from an engineering mentor, you will contribute to a well-scoped hardware project and gain exposure to cross-functional consumer product development. Join us in helping shape the next generation of AI glasses.

Responsibilities

Research, design, and prototype mechanical components and assemblies for AI glasses, with guidance from an engineering mentor
Create 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings, and participate in design reviews
Prepare mechanical bills of materials, engineering requirements, and supporting design documentation
Assist engineers and partners with material selection, manufacturing process selection, and mechanical integration of electronic components
Perform basic engineering analyses, including free-body diagrams, fit and clearance checks, weight estimates, and tolerance analysis appropriate to the project
Build prototypes and test fixtures; support mechanical, thermal, and environmental testing to evaluate design performance and investigate failures
Collaborate with electrical engineering, industrial design, reliability, manufacturing, and relevant technology partners to iterate designs and communicate test results and recommendations

Qualifications

Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
Foundational knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including statics, mechanics of materials, and material properties, demonstrated through coursework or project experience
Experience creating parts and assemblies using 3D CAD software such as Siemens NX, SolidWorks, Creo, or CATIA
Hands-on experience building, testing, or evaluating mechanical designs through academic, student-team, personal, or professional projects
Intent to return to full-time degree program after completion of the internship
Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment Prior internship or project experience in mechanical design, wearable devices, or consumer electronics
Familiarity with rapid prototyping methods such as 3D printing, CNC machining, or laser cutting
Basic understanding of manufacturing processes such as injection molding, die casting, machining, or sheet metal fabrication, and design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly principles
Exposure to GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, finite-element analysis, or experimental data analysis
Experience with Siemens NX, electromechanical packaging, small mechanisms, or mechanical test fixtures
Experience with scripting or data-analysis tools, such as Python or MATLAB, to support testing and analysis
