About this role
Portfolio construction sits at the heart of how J.P. Morgan delivers advice to clients, and the Office of Portfolio Construction (OPC) is the firm’s strategic engine behind it. We’re seeking an energetic, intellectually curious Analyst to join the Portfolio Construction Strategy team — the front-office arm of OPC — to help shape how advisors across the U.S. Private Bank and U.S. Wealth Management build, review, and refine client portfolios.
OPC is a major initiative for the business, with a mission to elevate portfolio construction as a core differentiator of the Private Bank and Wealth Management and equip advisors to build portfolios aligned to each client’s plan, grounded in our principles, and focused on after-tax outcomes. The group is focused on three pillars — establishing portfolio construction principles, tying strategy to portfolio action, and providing advisors with customized guidance they can scale — and operates across the Private Bank and U.S. Wealth Management, supporting 7,000+ advisors and more than $750B in investment assets. Our north star is embedding our advice and methodologies into the AI-powered tools (ConnectWealth and Portfolio Builder) that scale portfolio advice across every advisor.
You’ll work alongside senior Strategists and partner closely with Global Investment Strategy, Investments Research, Managed Investments, Due Diligence, and regional Investments & Advice leaders — gaining a broad, cross-asset view of how portfolios actually get built through an after-tax lens at one of the world’s leading wealth managers.
Our Team
The Portfolio Construction Strategy team is the advisor-facing engine of OPC. We own the firm’s portfolio construction philosophy, drive the content and education that bring it to life, and partner with every region and channel across the Private Bank and U.S. Wealth Management to drive adoption. Working with a product-agnostic lens — across public and private assets, taxable and tax-exempt portfolios, and discretionary, advisory and brokerage accounts — we help advisors answer the questions that matter most for client portfolios: how to build a strategic asset allocation, how to deliver on client preferences such as high income or concentrated-equity diversification, how to size high-conviction ideas alongside a core portfolio, and how to drive tax-efficiency across the whole portfolio.
Job Responsibilities
As an Analyst on the Portfolio Construction Strategy team, you’ll work under the guidance of senior Portfolio Construction and Tax-Aware Strategists and the US Head of Portfolio Construction Strategy. You’ll start by supporting the team’s core workstreams and, over time, aim to grow into a Portfolio Construction Strategist in your own right. In this role, you will:
- Support the development and rollout of our flagship Portfolio Construction content — including the Portfolio Construction Philosophy, Portfolio Construction Themes decks, Implementation Guide, sizing guidance primers, 1-pagers, and portfolio checklists — ensuring every piece is accurate, consistent, and on-message with our views.
- Partner on strategic initiatives such as the Expanded/Custom Strategic Asset Allocation framework, Portfolio Templates, and Framework for Taxes in Portfolio Construction — from design through advisor rollout.
- Help embed OPC methodologies into AI-powered advisor tools (ConnectWealth, Portfolio Builder, Co-Pilot, Connect Coach), working with Research, Risk, and technology partners to translate our frameworks into scalable product features.
- Work on large, complex client and prospect situations, helping advisors analyze portfolios and deliver solutions that win and retain assets.
- Prepare materials for broad advisor forums such as USPB Morning Meetings, U.S. Wealth Management National Calls, advisor training sessions, and senior leadership forums — including slides, talking points, and follow-up communications.
- Track progress against the team’s deliverables across USPB and USWM; coordinate with stakeholders in Global Investment Strategy, Investments Research, Managed Investments, Due Diligence, Portfolio Analytics, and regional Investments & Advice leadership to keep workstreams on plan.
- Build a deep, foundational understanding of capital markets, asset allocation, tax-aware investing, and multi-asset portfolio construction.
- Successful analysts will build a clear development track into a full Portfolio Construction Strategist seat on the team, developing cross-asset expertise spanning public equities and fixed income, private markets, hedge funds, structured products, and more — given the breadth of the team’s remit.
Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills
- 1–2 years of experience in wealth management, asset management, investment strategy, portfolio management, or another financial markets–related role.
- Genuine interest in financial markets, asset allocation, portfolio construction, and macro-level economics, with a strong willingness to learn and grow in these areas.
- Foundational understanding of taxes and how they influence portfolio decisions — including the impact on asset allocation and asset location — with an interest in deepening tax-aware investing expertise.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex portfolio and market concepts into clear, concise messages for advisors, senior leaders, and clients.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with high proficiency in AI tools and comfort working with portfolio and performance data.
- Background in finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, or financial accounting;
- Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, workstreams, and stakeholders simultaneously with limited supervision.
- Strong business acumen and strategic thinking, with a demonstrated interest in driving organizational priorities and cross-functional initiatives.
- High standards of service and attention to detail — strong initiative, energy, intellectual curiosity, and the confidence to engage senior partners across the organization.
- Experience with portfolio analytics and data analysis tools (Excel, Python, or similar), and familiarity with portfolio construction and optimization concepts.
- Exposure to multi-asset investing — including private markets, alternatives, tax-aware investing, or structured solutions — and awareness of the key industry debates in portfolio construction today.
- Experience in business management, project management, or stakeholder engagement, particularly in a client- or advisor-facing financial services context.
- FINRA Series 7 and Series 63 designations, or willingness to obtain the licenses within 120 days of joining the role.
Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills
- CFA designation or CFA candidacy is a strong plus.
