Position Information

Position Overview

The Sr. Product Manager is part of a team responsible for a product family serving academic institutions and reports to the product management leader. This role is built for a product management partner with lived experience in higher education administration — someone who has sat in the Dean's or Associate Dean's chair, run a nursing or allied health program, and felt the day-to-day friction of managing clinical placements, compliance, and student outcomes firsthand. That academic leadership background, paired with comfort around software and technology, is what allows this person to translate the real needs of Deans, Associate Deans, program directors, and clinical coordinators into a product roadmap that development teams can build against.

The Product Manager supports and grows products throughout their life cycle, working in a matrix environment across multiple internal departments, interfacing with academic customers, and researching and identifying options to improve the product. They work closely with the development team to support and make improvements to the product through story writing, prioritization of work, and regular iterative releases. This role works across multiple internal departments to define and implement the product family's vision and roadmap, assuring measurable attainment of revenue and customer satisfaction goals while meeting the business needs of academic institutions, and aligning all activities with HealthStream's organizational strategy and goals.

Key Responsibilities

- You will be responsible for adhering to all HealthStream security policies, procedures, and assigned training.

- Create, contribute to, and manage the strategy and roadmap for one or more products or functional areas serving academic institutions and their clinical/experiential education programs.

- Understand the market, target customers, buyers, and users of the product — Deans, Associate Deans, program directors, clinical coordinators, faculty, and students — through direct research and lived experience.

- Bring first-hand credibility with academic leadership to product discovery, grounded in real experience managing clinical placements, accreditation compliance, and program operations.

- Create confidence, clarity, and customer connection of product initiatives to all internal stakeholders.

- Be an expert on how the product functionally works and be able to effectively demo, train, and explain capabilities to internal stakeholders and academic customers.

- On an ongoing basis, focus efforts to deliver on the product roadmap, balancing long-term vision and time-to-market pressures with design and development.

- Perform product discovery and research with design and development to determine and define product solutions, enhancements, and optimizations that address academic institutions' clinical placement, compliance, and accreditation needs.

- Effectively collaborate and communicate with Design, Development, and QA teams on product requirements determined in product discovery, moving them into delivery via user stories.

- Prioritize epics and stories for one or more scrum teams and organize releases.

- Work with support to prioritize and resolve product issues while ensuring delivery against the product roadmap.

- Report on key performance indicators of products as well as supporting metrics for usage and engagement among academic institution customers.

- Use data effectively to drive a comprehensive understanding of the academic customer and product to ensure that all aspects of the product experience are world class.

- Manage team resource needs, risks, issues, project scope, and contingency plans, while escalating to leadership when appropriate.

- Work effectively with all internal stakeholders in the support, operations, and new releases for product success.

- Drive greater ecosystem value by creating offerings that are integrated with hStream's platform services and add value for hStream customers.

Qualifications

Requirements

- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree or terminal degree (e.g., EdD, PhD, DNP) in nursing, allied health, education, or a related field strongly preferred.

- 7+ years of progressive leadership experience in higher education administration, ideally including service as an Associate Dean, Dean, Program Director, or Department Chair within a nursing, allied health, or other health science program.

- Direct, hands-on experience managing clinical or experiential education — placements, preceptor/site relationships, competency validation, and compliance tracking — from the academic institution's side of the table.

- Working knowledge of accreditation standards and processes relevant to health science education (e.g., CCNE, ACEN, CAAHEP, ACOTE, or comparable bodies).

- Some background working with or evaluating academic and clinical education software — as a champion, evaluator, or implementation lead is highly valued; deep technical or coding experience is not required.

- Prior experience as a product manager, product owner, or subject-matter-expert consultant to an EdTech or health science software company is a plus, but not required — this role is designed for a recognized academic leader who is ready to bring that expertise in-house.

- Familiarity with software development lifecycle, agile principles, project management, and user experience design methods, or a demonstrated willingness and aptitude to learn them quickly.

Qualifications

- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, particularly when engaging with academic leadership, faculty, and administrators.

- Credibility and comfort speaking peer-to-peer with Deans, Associate Deans, program directors, and clinical coordinators about their operational and compliance challenges.

- Ability to translate academic and clinical education operational needs into clear, actionable product requirements for engineering and design teams.

- Successfully uses technical applications for business purposes (Salesforce, Microsoft, Power BI) or demonstrates the aptitude to quickly become proficient.

- Collaborative/ownership mentality, willing to lead through ambiguity and own performance.

- Comfort partnering with prototyping tools (e.g., InVision, Figma, Balsamiq) or willingness to learn.

- Communication & Positive Presence – listening attentively and respectfully; expressing thoughts and ideas effectively and concisely, both verbally and in writing; exhibiting a pleasant attitude.

- Collaboration – cooperating and working effectively with others in the pursuit of common goals.

- Critical Thinking – using sound judgment, logic, and common sense to identify efficient and effective ways of approaching problems or new initiatives.

- Adaptability – being flexible and continuing to function effectively during times of change.

- Continuous Improvement – keeping an open mind; seeking new ideas and ways of doing things in order to streamline processes and increase customer satisfaction.

- Work Ethic – setting high standards for one's work; taking care to ensure all aspects of work are completed accurately.

- Customer Service – treating academic customers with a high level of respect and taking action to meet or exceed expectations and resolve problems.
