About this role
Job Title: Geotechnical / Civil Engineer Job Description This early-career Geotechnical / Civil Engineer role offers a unique opportunity to help build out a growing geotechnical capability while working on high-impact civil and infrastructure projects in the Atlanta area. You will split your time between office-based engineering and field work, supporting construction, dams, mining-related activities, and traditional geotechnical investigations. This position is ideal for a motivated engineer with 13 years of experience who wants broad exposure, direct access to principal engineers and professional mentors, and the chance to grow into a key contributor rather than being one of many in a large firm. Responsibilities
- Develop various types of civil design plans, including design details and small plan sets to support geotechnical and civil projects.
- Conduct and review slope stability analyses and seepage analyses to support dam evaluations, embankments, and other geotechnical structures.
- Perform traditional geotechnical engineering tasks, including geotechnical evaluations and analysis for a variety of civil projects.
- Prepare and assist in preparing geotechnical engineering reports, including daily field documentation, geotechnical investigation summaries, and formal reporting for clients and regulatory agencies.
- Support construction and geotechnical inspection activities, including dam inspections, construction site visits, and field observation of drilling and earthwork.
- Travel to various field sites to perform geotechnical field inspections, oversee drilling operations, and provide on-site engineering support.
- Participate in field and site visits, documenting conditions, test results, and construction activities in a clear and organized manner.
- Provide CAD and design support using Civil 3D, Carlson, AutoCAD, or similar tools where capable, to assist with layouts and design details.
- Assist with permitting and project paperwork, coordinating with municipalities and regulatory agencies to help move projects through review and approval processes.
- Meet with clients, regulatory agencies, contractors, drillers, project managers, and other stakeholders to discuss project requirements, findings, and recommendations.
- Communicate comfortably and professionally with field personnel, contractors, engineers, project managers, and leadership to ensure alignment on project goals and technical decisions.
- Support dam evaluations and inspections by collecting data in the field, performing relevant analyses, and contributing to recommendations for remediation or improvement.
- Provide potential assistance to geologists and other technical staff on projects involving drilling, geology, and mining-related work.
- Support mine planning and production scheduling activities where applicable, contributing geotechnical insight to mining and excavation projects.
- Maintain a clean driving record and safely operate company vehicles to and from field sites, following all safety and operational procedures.
- Uphold all safety requirements, including OSHA and MSHA standards where applicable, and participate in safety training and physicals as required.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.
- 13 years of progressive experience in the geotechnical engineering field, including exposure to geotechnical analysis and field work.
- Registered Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or the ability to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within 6 months of hire.
- Solid understanding of slope stability analysis, seepage analysis, and general geotechnical engineering principles and design.
- Experience supporting the development of civil design plans for geotechnical or civil infrastructure projects.
- Proficiency in geotechnical evaluations, including interpreting subsurface data and applying appropriate analytical methods.
- Ability to travel and work in extreme weather conditions, with willingness to perform 2550% travel and fieldwork as project needs require.
- Ability to work outside around active construction sites, including standing, squatting, kneeling, lifting 50+ pounds, and dealing with varying weather conditions.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to speak comfortably and clearly with drillers, contractors, engineers, project managers, clients, and technical staff.
- Clean driving record and ability to safely drive to office, laboratory, and field sites.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States, confirmed via E-Verify.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with GeoStudio for geotechnical and slope stability analyses.
- Experience with AutoCAD for civil and geotechnical design and drafting.
- Familiarity with Civil 3D and Carlson software for civil design, earthwork modeling, and plan production.
- Experience with gINT for subsurface data management and boring logs.
- Experience using Bluebeam for plan review, markup, and document collaboration.
- Experience with MathCAD for engineering calculations and documentation.
- Familiarity with InfraWorks for infrastructure visualization and conceptual design is a plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, for reporting, data analysis, and communication.
- Experience with mine planning and production scheduling is a strong plus for mining-related projects.
- OSHA 10-hour certification is preferred; support may be available to obtain this certification if not already held.
- MSHA Part 48(b) New Miner certification is preferred; support may be available to obtain this certification if not already held.
- Interest in and comfort with working across multiple disciplines, including geotechnical engineering, mining, dams, drilling, geology, permitting, inspections, and construction.
- Motivation to grow in an early-career role with mentorship from professional engineers, and to help build out a geotechnical engineering capability over time.
Work Environment This role is based primarily in an office environment in the Atlanta area, with a significant field component. You will typically report to the office around 8:30 AM, though some days may begin directly at a project site. Initially, you will work in the office to build trust and familiarity with the team and projects; a hybrid schedule may be earned over time based on performance and reliability. On field days, you will drive your personal vehicle to the facility or laboratory, then use a company truck equipped with a gas card to travel to sites. Field and travel work generally accounts for approximately 2550% of your time, depending on project needs. You will work around active construction sites, dams, and drilling operations, often outdoors in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions. The role requires the ability to stand, squat, kneel, lift 50+ pounds, and move safely through uneven terrain and construction environments. Safety is a core focus, with adherence to OSHA and MSHA standards where applicable. The work environment offers a small-company feel with direct exposure to ownership, engineers, professional engineers, and project decision-makers, providing mentorship, reduced internal bureaucracy, and broad project exposure across geotechnical engineering, mining, dams, Civil 3D design, drilling, geology, permitting, inspections, and construction. Benefits include a substantial package with employer-paid premiums for medical, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, accidental death and dismemberment, life insurance, and telehealth services, as well as a 401(k) plan with a safe-harbor non-elective contribution. The week around Christmas is typically taken off, and travel expenses and per diem are provided where applicable, contributing to a supportive and attractive work environment for an early-career engineer.
