About this role

Company Description

Vattenfall is one of the largest energy companies in Europe. We make electricity and heat and supply energy to millions of customers. We do this in Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands.

With around 21,000 employees, we are enabling a future in which we are less dependent on the use of fossil fuels for our energy. We are at the forefront of the transition to a sustainable energy system. To achieve this ambitious goal, we are looking for talented individuals who, in addition to their passion for their own role, also have a strong team spirit and want to contribute to supporting a meaningful company mission.

Job Description

Do you want to use data, machine learning and AI to solve real business challenges and contribute to the energy transition? Do you enjoy turning complex data into solutions that create measurable value? Join our Data & Analytics team as a Data Scientist!

Your position

As a Data Scientist, you develop data science and AI solutions that contribute to Vattenfall's Business to Consumer ambitions, supporting both sustainable customer solutions and business value.

The Data & Analytics team develops data-driven solutions for marketing & sales, customer journeys, service and digitization, proposition development and sustainability advice to our customers.

Solving complex business challenges using data and machine learning is at the core of your work. You contribute throughout the journey, from exploring the business problem and possible approaches to developing, testing and implementing models on our Analytics Platform.

Depending on the challenge, you work with machine learning and, where appropriate, Generative AI. Together with colleagues, you evaluate whether solutions deliver the intended quality and business value before putting them into practice. You also consider aspects such as reliability, privacy and human oversight.

Throughout the data science product life cycle, you collaborate closely with business stakeholders, Analytics Engineers and Data & ML Engineers. You explain your approach and outcomes clearly and use feedback to continuously improve your solutions.

As a Data Scientist, you will:

- Develop data science solutions from idea to implementation, using machine learning and, where appropriate, Generative AI to solve business challenges and create measurable value.
- Build and evaluate reliable AI and machine-learning solutions, testing their quality and robustness and taking privacy, bias and human oversight into account.
- Write production-quality, reusable and testable code, applying practices such as Git, code reviews, automated testing and CI/CD.
- Work closely with Data & ML Engineers to make solutions reproducible and support their deployment, versioning and monitoring.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders and colleagues across disciplines, translating complex approaches and results into clear insights and continuously improving solutions based on feedback.

Where will you work?

The Vattenfall B2C Data & Analytics department develops data-driven solutions for our customers and customer processes. We do this through machine learning models, strategic analysis, reporting and self-service data solutions.

The department works across three business domain teams, where data experts and business experts collaborate closely to realise valuable data solutions. Each team consists of an Analytics Translator, Analytics Engineers and Data Scientists and is supported by Data & ML Engineers from IT.

We value the joint development of ways of working and best practices. You will participate in our Data Science Community of Practice, where colleagues exchange expertise and continuously improve how we work.

Qualifications

You are a solution-oriented Data Scientist who enjoys combining analytical thinking with practical problem solving. You take ownership of your work while collaborating closely with colleagues from different disciplines. You are curious about new approaches, but also critical: whether you use classical machine learning or Generative AI, you want to understand how a solution works and whether it actually adds value.

You can explain models and results clearly to colleagues without a technical background and are comfortable iterating on your work based on feedback.

Also, you recognize yourself in the following:

- You have an academic degree with a strong quantitative component, such as Mathematics, Physics, Econometrics or a comparable field.
- You have professional work experience as a Data Scientist or in a closely comparable Data Science role and have applied machine-learning methods to real-world problems.
- You communicate clearly in written and spoken English; Dutch is a plus.
- You are comfortable working in an agile environment.

Your technical experience includes:

- Writing production-quality Python;
- Applying machine-learning techniques, probability and statistics to real-world problems.
- Working with large and complex datasets, including an understanding of distributed computing.
- Practical experience with Generative AI, such as LLM APIs, prompting and structured outputs, and an understanding of how to evaluate controlled AI workflows.
- Working with DevOps practices (CICD, code reviews, git, etc.
