About this role
Tesla is seeking a Staff Factory Layout Engineer to lead the design and optimization of complete factory layouts and multiple high-volume vehicle assembly lines. This role requires the ability to simultaneously plan and integrate complex production systems while applying strong technical project management, spatial reasoning and collaborative problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in high-volume manufacturing and can translate operational needs into efficient, scalable facility designs. This role will be based in Austin, TX.
The team is responsible for developing factory designs that support seamless integration between production, material flow, construction and facilities teams. Through a detailed understanding of high-level factory objectives and extensive collaboration with the internal and external teams designing individual factory components, this role ensures that the factory design as a whole achieves Tesla’s objectives for space utilization, flow and capacity.
The ideal candidate will excel in a demanding and fast-paced environment as part of a strong, agile and highly motivated team working on ambitious manufacturing projects. A successful applicant will take pride in their thoroughness, analytical ability, spatial reasoning and ability to drive technical projects from concept through implementation. The candidate will think at a systems level about complex layout problems and use strong logic to develop designs that optimize space utilization and volumetric efficiency.

- Lead technical projects from concept through detailed design and implementation, managing scope, timelines, risks and cross-functional deliverables
- Apply advanced spatial reasoning to optimize space utilization, volumetric efficiency, throughput and material handling in high-volume manufacturing environments
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing, material flow and factory engineering teams to align layouts with operational, space and capacity requirements
- Communicate complex layouts, trade-offs and recommendations clearly through drawings, models, presentations and documentation to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Identify and resolve layout, flow and integration challenges, proposing practical solutions that improve productivity, flexibility and scalability
- Create and maintain detailed 2D/3D layouts and supporting documentation; support design reviews and executive-level communication of layout decisions and trade-offs
- Contribute to greenfield planning, line ramp-up and facility expansions while ensuring designs support high-volume production targets
- Provide updates on the factory layout to senior and executive leadership
- Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Architecture or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- 8–10 years of professional experience in factory layout design, plant layout or closely related roles within high-volume manufacturing
- Strong technical project management skills with a track record of delivering complex engineering projects on schedule
- Excellent collaboration, teamwork and communication skills
- Demonstrated problem-solving ability and strong spatial reasoning
- Experience working in high-volume manufacturing environments
- Proven experience designing entire factory layouts or multiple assembly lines simultaneously (preferred)
- Experience managing a small team (preferred)
