About this role

The Role

The HR Compliance & Benefits Administrator is the owner of the high-stakes, time-sensitive work on the People team: benefits, leave and accommodations, immigration, and multi-state employment compliance. You’ll be our in-house expert on the things that can’t slip, and the person who makes sure a leave case, a visa deadline, or a state filing never becomes a fire drill.

We’re looking for someone who actually likes this work: who finds a clean benefits reconciliation satisfying, reads the fine print, and gets a quiet thrill out of knowing the answer before someone asks. You’re meticulous without being rigid, you can translate a regulation into a plain-English answer for an employee who is stressed, and you know when a question is yours to answer and when it needs a lawyer. You’ve done this at a company that was growing fast and crossing state lines, and you know what breaks when it isn’t done right.

This role reports to our People Operations lead and partners closely with Finance and outside counsel.

What you’ll own

- Benefits administration end to end: enrollment, qualifying life events, vendor and broker management, reconciliation, and annual renewal and open enrollment

- Leave and accommodations: FMLA, state leave programs (including MA PFML), disability, parental leave, and ADA accommodations, from first request through return to work

- Immigration: coordinating H-1B and other visa cases with outside counsel, tracking deadlines, and keeping employees informed

- Multi-state employment compliance: registrations, required postings and notices, pay transparency, and keeping our policies current as we add states

- Required filings and audits: ACA, 401(k) nondiscrimination testing, EEO-1, workers’ comp, and whatever else comes with growth

- Owning the Employee Handbook and policy library from a compliance perspective, and flagging when something needs to change

- Being the plain-English answer for employees with benefits, leave, or immigration questions

Requirements

- 4+ years in HR compliance, benefits administration, or a combination of the two, at a company with employees in multiple states

- Hands-on experience administering leave (FMLA and at least one state program) and ADA accommodations

- Experience running an open enrollment and working directly with a benefits broker and carriers

- Working knowledge of multi-state employment law and the judgment to know when to escalate to counsel

- Meticulous with details and deadlines; you keep a tracker and it is always right

- Discreet, calm, and kind with employees in sensitive situations

- Based in or willing to relocate to the Boston area; this role is in-office in Watertown, MA

Nice to haves

- Experience transitioning a company off a PEO

- Experience coordinating employment-based immigration cases (H-1B, O-1, green card processes) with counsel

- Experience supporting a mixed hourly and salaried workforce, including manufacturing or field employees

- SHRM-CP, PHR, or CEBS certification

- Experience with Rippling
