About this role

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) established its flagship internship and mentoring program in honor of Dr. Joseph S. Nye, Jr., who devoted his career to the preparation and mentoring of generations of Americans and global strategists. The Joseph S. Nye, Jr. National Security Internship and Mentoring Program seeks to follow Dr. Nye's leadership in this area by offering a rigorous internship program involving policy research, writing, exposure to national policy debates and decision makers, and professional development. CNAS offers full-time (40 hrs/week) internships for a six-month term. Interns are given a $75 per month transportation stipend and an additional stipend of $1,900 per month intended to help cover daily expenses incurred during the internship.

The Indo-Pacific Security (IPS) Program seeks to inform the exercise of U.S. power and leadership in the Indo-Pacific region through a wide variety of research, publications, in-country fieldwork, and activities, including dialogues with officials, public events, and expert working groups. The program’s research agenda addresses opportunities and challenges for the United States in the region, with a growing focus on issues that originate in the Indo-Pacific but have global implications.   Ideal candidates will be team players who have strong writing skills, a self-starter mentality, experience with detail-oriented work on tight deadlines, and a demonstrated interest in the region. Exercising thoughtful judgment, especially when balancing multiple projects, coordinating across teams, and engaging with external experts and policy practitioners, will also be an important qualification for consideration. This is a rewarding and fast-paced internship with significant responsibility, offering the chance the join a tight-knit, dynamic team and work closely with senior and junior staff across the full lifecycle of research. As integral members of the IPS team, interns will support research efforts and assist with CNAS events featuring top experts in the field, while also taking advantage of opportunities to write under their own bylines and attend professional development and mentorship sessions.

CNAS is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
