About this role

About Shepherd Electric Supply

Since 1892, Shepherd Electric Supply has been the first call when complex, time-critical electrical challenges need to be solved, and reliability truly matters. We move materials accurately and on time, so contractors stay on schedule, projects stay on track, and customers never have to wonder if we will come through.

Our success comes from people who take pride in doing things the right way — safely, accurately, and with care for teammates and customers alike. If you want to do work that matters at a company that notices, this is the place.

Why This Role Matters

As Shepherd expands our capabilities in Energy, Renewables, and Engineered Solutions, we are creating a department leadership role to manage and further develop these areas of the business. The Manager will take leadership of the existing Energy Department while building out our growing Engineered Solutions initiative — owning estimating, quotations, project management, energy-audit activity, budgeting, forecasting, KPI development, and the team itself.

A significant focus is building a consistent, repeatable process for engineered-product opportunities — where Shepherd receives drawings, specifications, and submittal requirements, develops the quotation, and manages the project through completion, all tracked in JM/Job Management. This is both a strategic and a hands-on role: you will shape how the department operates, establish meaningful performance measurement, and build a scalable capability that supports our sales organization and our customers.

This is a chance to take ownership of an established, important part of Shepherd while helping build the next stage of its growth. The department does not need a caretaker — it needs a leader who delivers profitable growth, strong project execution, accountability, and excellent service, and who builds a team that holds to that standard.

How This Role Connects to Our Compass

We Keep Our Promises:

Customers and our sales organization count on this department to deliver — accurate quotations, timely submittals, and projects managed cleanly through completion. When you commit to a scope, a price, and a date, you own the outcome, not the excuse.

We Stay Hungry:

You are not running the same playbook forever. You drive profitable growth in Energy, Renewables, and Engineered Solutions, identify new ways to expand what Shepherd can do, and build a scalable Engineered Solutions capability where one does not yet fully exist.

We Grow Together:

You build a high-performing team through clear expectations, coaching, development, and succession planning. You partner early and often with the sales organization, purchasing, manufacturers, and customers — because this department wins as part of the whole.

We Own It:

The department’s performance is yours — the budget, the forecast, the margins, and the KPIs. You hold estimators and project managers accountable for accurate, timely information in JM, and when a process falls short, you redesign it rather than work around it.

We Go Above & Beyond:

You get involved early in significant opportunities to shape scope, resources, and execution strategy. You anticipate risk before it reaches the customer, and you build the processes and standards that let the department scale as the business grows.

Key Outcomes

Organized by what matters, not just what you do.

Department Leadership & People Management

- Partner with Human Resources on recruiting, onboarding, training, performance management, and employee development

- Evaluate staffing and resource needs as the department and Engineered Solutions business grow

- Develop a culture of accountability, teamwork, responsiveness, and continuous improvement

Estimating, Quotations & Engineered Solutions

- Oversee estimating and quotations for all applicable Energy, Renewable, and Engineered Solutions opportunities, ensuring drawings, specifications, and scope are thoroughly reviewed before quoting

- Develop consistent estimating and quotation standards — improving accuracy, turnaround, documentation, margin discipline, and follow-up

- Review significant or complex opportunities for technical, commercial, scheduling, and execution risk

- Lead the Engineered Solutions initiative: review drawings and specifications, determine scope and product requirements, coordinate manufacturers and submittals, and manage projects through completion

- Build a repeatable, scalable Engineered Solutions process that can be used across Shepherd’s sales organization

Project Management & Job Management (JM)

- Establish consistent project-management standards from initial quotation through final closeout

- Manage the full project lifecycle — quotation, award, submittal, approval, release, procurement, delivery, change management, and closeout — with clear handoffs between estimating and project management

- Keep scope, exclusions, pricing assumptions, milestones, changes, and customer commitments documented and communicated

- Serve as the department leader for consistent use of JM/Job Management, setting standards for how opportunities and projects are entered and maintained

- Ensure JM gives accurate visibility into open quotations, active projects and values, status, submittals and approvals, releases, changes, milestones, and closeout

Forecasting, Budgeting & KPIs

- Develop the department’s annual sales, gross profit, and expense budgets, and maintain regular forecasts

- Maintain visibility into pipeline, backlog, open quotations, awarded projects, and anticipated revenue

- Compare actual performance against budget and forecast, identify risks and opportunities, and act on them

- Build and maintain a departmental KPI scorecard — covering sales vs. budget, margin, quote volume and turnaround, conversion, pipeline, backlog, submittal and milestone performance, and project margin

- Give leadership clear, reliable visibility into department performance and expected results

Sales & Business Development Support

- Partner with the sales organization to identify, develop, and close Energy, Renewable, and Engineered Solutions opportunities

- Engage early in significant opportunities to help set scope, technical requirements, resources, manufacturers, and execution strategy

- Convert energy audits and identified energy-saving opportunities into actionable proposals and projects

- Participate in strategic customer meetings where technical expertise or management involvement advances the opportunity

- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key manufacturers supporting Energy, Renewables, and Engineered Solutions

What Success Looks Like

In your first several months, you and your leadership should both be able to point to these markers:

- The team has clear roles, expectations, and goals — and knows how their performance is measured

- Estimating and quotation standards are consistent, with measurable gains in accuracy and turnaround

- A repeatable Engineered Solutions process is defined and in use across applicable opportunities

- JM/Job Management reliably reflects quotations, active projects, status, submittals, releases, and milestones

- A KPI scorecard is live and used to manage the department and drive improvement

- Budgets and forecasts are in place, and leadership has clear visibility into pipeline and expected results

- Significant opportunities are supported early — the department is a partner to sales, not a bottleneck

Who Thrives Here

This role is a strong fit if:

- You lead a department, not just projects — you build teams, set standards, and develop people

- You balance strategic leadership with hands-on operational oversight and do not see them as competing demands

- You hold people accountable with directness and care, and you expect accurate, timely information

- You have strong commercial and financial judgment — margin, budgets, forecasts, and project profitability are second nature

- You bring process and technology discipline, and you will make JM/Job Management work the way it should

- You communicate and build relationships well across sales, operations, purchasing, and manufacturers

- You want to build something scalable — a department that grows with the business

Qualifications & Requirements

- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and complex projects

- Sound commercial and financial judgment — understanding of sales, gross margin, budgets, forecasts, and project profitability

- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, and a demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments, manufacturers, and vendors

- Ability and willingness to lead, coach, develop, and hold team members accountable

- Strong process and technology discipline, including the ability to effectively use JM/Job Management
