About this role
Overview:
The Cybersecurity Threat Operations Intern supports the Threat Operations team by assisting with day-to-day security operations across threat detection, monitoring, analysis, and incident response activities. The role is designed to provide hands-on exposure to real security tooling, healthcare risk considerations, and cross-functional security workflows while developing foundational technical and professional skills.
Project Drive Duties:
As part of the internship program, each intern is assigned a project that they will own throughout their time with the Threat Operations team. The goal is to provide hands-on experience designing, building, documenting, and implementing a real cybersecurity solution that improves St. Luke's Health System detection, response, monitoring, or preventative security capabilities. Interns will work through the full project lifecycle while receiving guidance and mentorship from team members, ultimately delivering a meaningful improvement to the organization's security program.
Additional Responsibilities & Opportunities
In addition to project work, interns may participate in day-to-day operational activities as time allows, including:
General Duties:
- Assist with security alert triage and investigation (SIEM/EDR), threat hunting activities, detection engineering initiatives, alert tuning efforts, documentation, and operational security projects.
- Exposure to multiple cybersecurity domains may be provided based on organizational needs and the intern's strengths and interests.
Expectations:
- Be curious, ethical, communicative, receptive to feedback, and capable of following established processes while actively learning and adapting in a healthcare-focused security environment.
Measures of Success:
- Demonstrates consistent progress through a "progress over perfection" mindset by incorporating feedback, learning from mistakes, and showing measurable growth throughout the internship.
- Actively engages with mentors, asks thoughtful questions, seeks opportunities to learn, and demonstrates curiosity about cybersecurity concepts and operations.
- Successfully delivers assigned project milestones and contributes meaningful improvements to the organization's detection, monitoring, response, or preventative security capabilities.
- Produces clear, accurate, and actionable documentation that can be understood and utilized by team members.
- Contributes to operational activities in a manner that improves analyst efficiency, alert fidelity, process maturity, or overall team effectiveness.
- Demonstrates increasing independence, sound judgment, and an understanding of cybersecurity risk appropriate to their experience level.
Learning & Development Expectations:
Not expected to have deep cybersecurity expertise, healthcare security experience, or independent incident ownership on day one. Effort, integrity, professionalism, curiosity, and a willingness to learn are valued more than prior knowledge. Interns are expected to be self-aware enough to recognize when they need assistance, ask questions, and seek guidance rather than attempt to work through uncertainty alone.
