Job Description

Location: Hyderabad, India
Division: Analytical Instruments Group, Materials & Structural Analysis Division
Organization: Semiconductor R&D

About the team

Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Materials and Structural Analysis Semiconductor R&D organization brings together around 400 engineers developing electron microscopy solutions and applications. Our global teams in Eindhoven, Brno, Hillsboro, Hyderabad, and Bordeaux combine expertise in hardware, software, and scientific applications to help customers make the world cleaner, healthier, and safer.

Within this organization, the Cortex value stream develops software for semiconductor data workflows, including tools to organize, explore, and visualize microscopy data. We’re looking for a Software Test Engineer to build quality into Cortex development and progressively establish an automated release-validation capability.

How will you make an impact?

You’ll work with developers, product owners, and other engineering partners to make quality part of the development process from the start. You’ll design and maintain automated tests for critical user journeys, APIs, integrations, and regressions, and help the team understand product risk through clear evidence and coverage metrics.

This is an ownership role: you’ll investigate issues, challenge unclear requirements, and advocate for the customer and user experience throughout development—not only validate software after it is built. Your work will help the team release Cortex changes with greater confidence across Core and Contributor applications.

What will you do?

- Build and maintain automated end-to-end tests for Cortex’s critical user journeys.
- Develop API and integration tests that validate service behavior, data flows, and interactions between components.
- Create and maintain a reliable regression suite that supports frequent development and releases.
- Test compatibility across Cortex Core, Contributor applications, plugins, and relevant user workflows.
- Define and improve test strategy, test design, and automation practices in collaboration with developers and product owners.
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and help establish quality gates for builds and releases.
- Support release validation by assessing test results, identifying risks, and communicating evidence-based recommendations.
- Track meaningful test coverage and quality metrics, using them to identify gaps and guide improvements.
- Investigate defects, reproduce issues, analyze logs and test evidence, and work with developers to identify root causes.
- Challenge ambiguous or incomplete requirements and help define clear, testable acceptance criteria.
- Advocate for customer and user needs, including usability and reliability across complex scientific workflows.
- Collaborate closely with developers throughout implementation so that testability and quality are considered early.
- Help improve test stability, execution speed, maintainability, and the signal-to-noise ratio of automated test results.
- Explore additional testing approaches, such as performance, contract, or distributed-system testing, where they address product risks.
- Learn the semiconductor domain and Cortex workflows, and test solutions in the environments used by the team, including virtual machines.
- Regularly reflect with the team on how to improve quality practices and delivery.

You’ll be part of a distributed Agile Scrum team working with colleagues in Bordeaux, Hillsboro, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. The role is based in Hyderabad and reports to the Functional Group Lead.

How will you get here?

Education

- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Required experience and skills

- Professional experience in software testing, test automation, or quality engineering.
- Experience designing and implementing automated end-to-end tests using Cypress, Playwright, or a comparable framework.
- Experience with API testing and integration testing.
- Proficiency in TypeScript, Python, or an equivalent language used for test automation.
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong test-design skills, including the ability to identify risks, select effective coverage, and build maintainable regression automation.
- Experience investigating defects and working with developers to determine root causes.
- Strong attention to detail and a curious, investigative approach to problem-solving.
- Ability to understand software from the customer and user perspective and challenge unclear requirements constructively.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, with a commitment to quality across the development lifecycle.
- A sense of ownership and the ability to make data-informed recommendations about product quality and release readiness.
