Job Description

About the role

Help develop an FPGA-based research prototyping platform for real-time audio and active noise reduction experimentation. This hands-on role emphasizes electrical hardware and FPGA development, with opportunities to work across system architecture, circuit integration, digital signal processing, and audio testing.

Working with research engineers, you will help turn platform requirements into a working, characterized system that enables researchers to implement and evaluate new algorithms.

Responsibilities

- Evaluate and integrate FPGA hardware, audio ADCs/DACs, clocking, power supplies, and analog and digital interfaces.
- Design or modify supporting circuits and interface boards as needed.
- Develop FPGA logic for audio acquisition, routing, processing, and output.
- Bring up and troubleshoot hardware using laboratory instruments and FPGA debugging tools.
- Investigate MATLAB/Simulink integration to simplify deployment of research algorithms.
- Implement pass-through, gain, and basic FIR/IIR filter examples; compare hardware results with simulation.
- Characterize noise, dynamic range, frequency response, distortion, latency, crosstalk, and channel synchronization.
- Set up and conduct acoustic transfer-function measurements, loudspeaker-based testing, and active noise reduction evaluations.
- Develop repeatable measurement scripts and document setup procedures, results, limitations, and troubleshooting steps.

Required qualifications

- Pursuing a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field.
- Hands-on FPGA development experience with Verilog, VHDL, or equivalent tools.
- Strong understanding of digital electronics and electrical engineering fundamentals.
- Familiarity with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and systematic hardware troubleshooting.
- Basic understanding of sampling, digital filters, and DSP.
- Ability to work independently on defined engineering tasks and communicate results clearly.

Preferred experience

- Mixed-signal circuits, audio converters, or PCB design and bring-up.
- Digital interfaces such as I²S, TDM, or SPI.
- MATLAB/Simulink, HDL generation, or embedded programming.
- Audio measurements and automated hardware testing.

Expected outcomes

A working research prototype with verified audio paths, representative processing examples, documented performance, and clear instructions that allow another engineer to reproduce the setup and measurements.
