About this role

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

Blue Origin is seeking a Mechanical Engineer III to join our Mechanical Engineering team. In this role, you will work across the full design cycle with minimal oversight, taking ownership of product design, development strategy, and tactical planning. You will contribute to the design, development, and verification of structural, mechanical, and/or fluids systems across one or more of our key engineering disciplines. This is a hands-on technical role with broad impact on hardware delivery and program success.

Responsibilities

- Lead and contribute to the full engineering design cycle with significant technical depth across multiple disciplines, operating independently as part of a collaborative, cross-functional team
- Take ownership of product design, development strategy, and tactical planning, driving work forward with minimal day-to-day direction
- Create, review, and maintain engineering documentation including models, drawings, specifications, and test procedures
- Provide input on schedules, budgets, and milestones, and exercise technical approval authority within the program
- Contribute to tool development, process improvements, and the release and support of engineering products
- Support strategic initiatives, technology maturation, and the development and capture of departmental best practices
- Apply advanced engineering fundamentals across the full development lifecycle — spanning requirements definition, design, analysis, fabrication, assembly, verification, and test
- Demonstrate advanced proficiency in engineering drawing and 3D modeling, including the creation of detail and assembly drawings with proper application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Identify, understand, and manage technical interfaces between your discipline and the broader engineering organization

Problem Solving & Impact

- Independently determine and develop solutions to problems of diverse scope, where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors
- Apply sound technical judgment to select methods and techniques best suited for a given solution, effectively balancing risk and technical design
- Successfully perform root cause analyses and develop corrective actions related to major-scope non-conformances

B asic Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline
- 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical engineering, including work across multiple phases of the hardware development lifecycle (design, analysis, fabrication, verification, and/or test)
- Established proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and engineering drawing creation (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, NX, or equivalent)
- Working knowledge and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 or equivalent standards
- Experience performing or supporting root cause analysis and corrective action development for hardware non-conformances
- Ability to read, interpret, and produce engineering drawings and models that meet program and manufacturing requirements

Preferred Qualifications

- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline
- Experience in one or more of Blue Origin's core mechanical engineering disciplines: Combustion Devices, ECLSS, Electronics Packaging, Energetics, Fluids Components, Fluids Systems, Mechanical Systems, Payloads and Interiors, Structures, or Turbomachinery
- Demonstrated experience owning a product or subsystem through the full design cycle from concept through delivery
- Experience providing schedule, budget, or milestone inputs on engineering programs
- Familiarity with Model-Based Definition (MBD) and/or Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices
- Experience with aerospace or defense hardware development in a regulated or safety-critical environment
- Exposure to process improvement initiatives, engineering tool development, or best-practice documentation efforts
- Experience with Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), design verification planning, or test procedure development
- Prior experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to junior engineers
