About the role and team

The Platform Engineering team (Compute, Network, Storage, Reliability and Hardware engineering, Corporate IT and more) lies within the broader Uber Engineering group. The mission of the Platform Engineering team is to "Empower One Uber to innovate by building a world-class foundation that accelerates growth at scale"

We are looking for a Director, Engineering Lead Uber’s end-to-end Observability organization to deliver a modern, AI-forward telemetry and incident-management platform that keeps engineers “never flying blind,” materially improves reliability and rollout safety, and becomes a strategic advantage for how Uber builds and operates software at scale. The successful candidate will have broad software development and managerial experience in a multi-location environment.

What you’ll do

- Strategy & Vision: Own the long-term vision and roadmap for observability at Uber, tied directly to company priorities on reliability, rollout safety, and developer productivity. Regularly communicate strategy, trade-offs, and progress to senior engineering and product leadership.
- Agentic AI Innovation: Pioneer the integration of Agentic techniques into the observability platform to autonomously triage incidents, automate complex root-cause analysis, and orchestrate real-time remediations—transforming Uber’s telemetry from passive monitoring into proactive, self-healing infrastructure at scale.
- Platform & Product Leadership: Drive architecture and execution for large-scale distributed telemetry systems, including real-time analytics for customer experience observability and deployment safety. Set and enforce standards for instrumentation, SLOs, dashboards, and alerting across thousands of services and internal applications.
- Reliability & Incident Management: Partner with Incident Management and Production Engineering to ensure observability is tightly integrated into incident detection, triage, and postmortems. Reduce noise and cognitive load on on-call engineers through better signal quality, correlation, and actionable alerts.
- Cross-Functional & Stakeholder Management: Align with Developer Platform, product orgs, and BizTech on shared goals (e.g., rollout safety, reliability KPIs, developer satisfaction) and ensure observability roadmaps support those goals.

Basic Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field
- A minimum of 10 years proven experience in enterprise software development leadership roles, with a strong track record of success in observability
- 7+ years of management experience leading large software engineering teams

Preferred Qualifications

- Prior leadership experience from a top-scale environment or combination of large company and start-up with ownership of the observability charter
- AI-forward and innovative thinker
- Systems thinker who can balance reliability, cost, and developer experience, and who is comfortable making hard trade-offs with imperfect information
- Ability to create vision and direction for the team in collaboration with numerous engineering stakeholders
- A keen interest in user experience and building the right solution through quick iterations and feedback
- Ability to execute strongly within a large, loosely structured organization, with rapidly changing requirements
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously, without losing sight of the highest priority items
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and with the ability to drive discussions / roadmaps with other engineering leaders within Uber and negotiate conflicting priorities.
- A track record of attracting strong technical talent and providing mentorship to grow them further
