About this role

Tesla’s world-class Prismatic Cell Manufacturing Engineering team is looking for a highly motivated Factory Design Engineer for Cell Manufacturing, layout and material flow of battery cell manufacturing lines. This engineer is expected to set factory requirements, line layouts and shape how people and materials move around them for fast and efficient ramp of manufacturing lines to high volume production.

The battery cell is a critical component in Tesla vehicles and storage systems. This role will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to our products. The work environment is demanding, fast-paced and incredibly exciting. The ideal candidate should be ready to push their limits, as they join in highly motivated and capable team to make unbelieve things into reality.

- Lead factory design, layout and material flow for battery cell manufacturing lines, from electrode and cell assembly through formation, test, and pack out.Develop and maintain 2D and 3D layouts and 3D scans of the factory (AutoCAD, Revit, or equivalent), and drive layout reviews and sign-off with Process, Equipment, Facilities, and EHS teams
- Coordinate utility requirements (power, compressed air, process cooling, gases, exhaust) with equipment owners, Facilities, and EPC partners, and manage equipment move-in, install sequencing, and ramp readiness
- Build capacity models and discrete-event simulations (FlexSim, Simio, or equivalent) to size lines, buffers, and WIP, balance takt time, and identify bottlenecks before equipment is installed.Design material delivery and handling systems for high-volume cell production, including electrode rolls, cans, electrolyte, trays and carriers, using conveyors, AGVs/AMRs, and manual or automated storage.Apply lean principles to reduce travel distance, handling, inventory, and non-value-added motion, including line-side supply, kitting, and standard work for material handlers
- Develop cost and schedule estimates for layout changes and material handling projects, and manage third party or Tesla machine/automation suppliers and integrators through design review, FAT/SAT, and commissioning
- Lead safety and ergonomic reviews of layouts and material flow, including forklift and AGV traffic, fire and egress, and compliance with applicable codes and regulations
- Use production and MES data to track material flow performance, find constraints, and drive continuous improvement in throughput, space utilization, and cost per cell

- Degree or Equivalent Experience in Mechanical, Mechatronics Engineering, Physics or another engineering discipline, with more than 5 years of relevant experience in a high volume manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated experience in factory design, layout and material flow.Strong hands-on experience with high-volume manufacturing including practical knowledge in selection of material handling systems
- Availability for domestic/international travel as required; knowledge and understanding of Battery Cell technology a plus
- Structured thinking and problem-solving abilities proven through several root cause analysis following a data driven approach, statistical software (JMP) a plus
- Experience with clean/dry room or other controlled environment manufacturing preferred
- Experience with discrete-event simulation or capacity modeling tools (FlexSim, Simio, AnyLogic or similar); strong understanding of lean manufacturing and line balancing
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, or similar) and facility drawings and scans
