About this role

Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of manufacturing engineers, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and standing up the tooling, fixtures, ground support equipment (GSE), and production work centers that build and process precision valve hardware. You will own tooling efforts from initial concept through fabrication and installation, and partner with product-specific manufacturing engineers for commissioning and production handoff — working directly with design engineering, manufacturing operations, supply chain, and facilities teams to ensure production systems are safe, repeatable, and ready to build hardware at rate.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, hands-on judgment, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required.

Special Mentions:

- Relocation provided
- Travel expected up to 10% of the time
- Shift: Monday – Friday (weekday)

Must be physically able to:

- Support production floor activities
- Lift and carry 40 lbs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Design, develop, procure, install, and commission custom manufacturing tooling, fixtures, and GSE for precision valve assembly, test (leak and functional), and integration
- Lead work center and production line standup — including layout, flow design, capacity planning, and readiness validation
- Own tooling development efforts end to end: define requirements, drive CAD design, manage vendor fabrication, and validate to production readiness
- Develop and maintain tooling drawings and documentation packages to Blue Origin and ASME standards (Y14.5, Y14.100)
- Conduct GD&T analysis and tolerance stack-ups to ensure tooling meets assembly and functional requirements
- Develop Concepts of Operations (ConOps) for new tooling, defining how tools will be used on the factory floor to ensure safety, ergonomics, and process repeatability
- Collaborate with external suppliers and tooling fabricators through design, fabrication, and acceptance phases
- Support the development of manufacturing work instructions for tool use and work center operations across assembly, test, integration, and refurbishment processes
- Design proper material handling and packaging solutions to protect precision hardware throughout the build and test process
- Identify and implement improvements to tooling, fixturing, and production flow to drive gains in safety, quality, cost, and delivery
- Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews and participate in design gated reviews to ensure tooling considerations are integrated early
- Manage tooling configuration and maintain pedigree throughout the build and commissioning process

Minimum Qualifications

- BS in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university
- 5+ years of direct experience in tooling design, GSE development, or manufacturing engineering with a strong tooling focus
- Hands-on experience designing and developing tooling, fixtures, and GSE for precision mechanical assemblies — including tight tolerance assembly, part fixturing, leak testing, and functional acceptance testing
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., Creo, NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent) for detailed tooling design and drawing production
- Strong working knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing standards (ASME Y14.5)
- Demonstrated ability to manage tooling projects from concept through production validation, including vendor coordination and schedule management
- Experience standing up or significantly contributing to production work centers, assembly lines, or manufacturing cells
- Strong written, verbal, and technical communication skills across all levels of the organization
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with design, manufacturing, and testing of fluid systems, valve mechanisms, or precision fluid control hardware
- Experience with rate manufacturing environments — production line setup, flow optimization, and capacity planning
- Experience designing automated manufacturing equipment, PLC controllers, sensor integration, etc.
- Familiarity with pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Familiarity with modular tooling, or reconfigurable fixture concepts
- Experience with Windchill PLM software
- Knowledge of AS9100 Quality Management System (QMS)
- Experience developing tooling requirements documents, ConOps, or similar engineering specifications
- Six Sigma Green Belt, 5S, Lean or equivalent continuous improvement experience
