Topic: Assessment on Gonococci associated anti-microbial resistance & self-care among People Living with HIV

Place of Work: New Delhi / Remote

Division : HIV-Hepatitis-STI (HHS)

1. Background

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Neisseria gonorrhoeae , the bacterium responsible for gonorrhea, is a growing public health concern due to the emergence and spread of resistance to multiple antibiotics used for treatment. The increasing threat of drug-resistant gonorrhea highlights the need to understand regional resistance patterns, emerging trends, surveillance systems, treatment guidelines, and gaps in research and public health responses.

“Self-care is the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider”. The scope of self-care includes (a) health promotion, (b) disease prevention and control, (c) self-medication, (d) providing care to dependent persons, (e) seeking hospital/specialist/primary care if necessary and (f) rehabilitation, including palliative care. World Health Organization (WHO) considering the gap in health care providers work force and the increasing out of pocket expenditure, suggested for innovative health sector response. One of such innovative practice, includes, Self-care.

A comprehensive literature review will be undertaken to synthesize available evidence on gonorrhea-associated AMR in South-East Asia Region and self-care among PLHIV in India.
