About this role

Monumental is automating on-site construction with robotics and software. Our mission is to make construction software-defined and autonomous - a future where beautiful, bespoke buildings go up in a single day, with minimal labour.

We're a growing team of engineers, operators and technicians from diverse backgrounds, including consumer tech, finance and media, and companies like Dyson, Shopify, Meta and Tesla. It's still the early days of building the company, and this is a chance to make an outsized impact on a problem that matters. From day one, you'll be working with an experienced founding team, backed by a $32M Series B led by Khosla Ventures and Plural, alongside other renowned investors.

Monumental is based in the city centre of Amsterdam, in a beautiful facility with a fully equipped workshop and robot testing floor. We build the whole stack in-house, hardware and software. Our work involves building robots in our workshop and houses on real construction sites, so we're onsite five days a week.

About the role

We're looking for a Bookkeeper to bring our day-to-day bookkeeping and month-end close in-house. You'll be our first dedicated bookkeeper, taking over from our external accounting firm and running the books for our growing group: five Dutch BVs today, plus our entities abroad.

Our transaction volume has roughly doubled this year, and 2027 is the first financial year our accounts will be audited. You'll own the reconciliations, records and close process that make our numbers reliable, working closely with our finance lead, purchasing team and external accountants. The external accountants will continue to handle annual accounts and corporate tax, with local advisors handling tax filings abroad.

This is a hands-on bookkeeping role for someone with at least three years of experience running the full cycle through month-end. Our data and processes need cleaning up. If you enjoy turning a messy administration into a tidy one, this is that job. As you settle in, there is room to take on VAT filing and monthly payroll processing.

The role is based at our Amsterdam HQ, on-site five days a week. Salary is up to €50,000 gross a year, including the 8% holiday allowance.

What you'll do

- Own daily bookkeeping. Code supplier invoices and card spend in Spendesk with the right GL account, VAT code and cost centre, and post them to the general ledger without re-keying. Keep supplier records clean and prepare payment runs. Supplier bank-detail changes are independently verified and approved; payment approval and release sit with the finance lead.
- Keep accounts reconciled. Reconcile bank accounts, keep payables and receivables current, and investigate outstanding items so every balance is supported or explained.
- Run the month-end close. Close all entities to a fixed timetable, initially by working day eight and moving towards working day five. Own accruals, prepayments and balance-sheet reconciliations, collect or prepare foreign entities' figures, agree intercompany balances and reconcile group reporting to the ledgers.
- Maintain fixed assets and inventory records. Keep the fixed-asset register up to date, including capitalisation and depreciation of our robot fleet under agreed accounting policies, and reconcile inventory accounts to month-end stock values.
- Prepare Dutch VAT returns. Prepare quarterly btw returns with our external accountants reviewing, and take over filing them over time.
- Keep the books audit-ready. Maintain supporting schedules and an audit file throughout the year. Be a day-to-day contact for our external accountants and support the audit of our 2027 accounts.
- Improve how we work. Document the close, fix recurring errors and use spreadsheets, software and AI tools to reduce manual work while checking the results carefully. Depending on your experience, take on payroll processing in Loket over time, with payroll tax filings remaining with our external accountants.

What we're looking for

- Full-cycle bookkeeping experience. You have at least three years of experience running the books through month-end, at an accounting firm (accountantskantoor) or in-house.
- Hands-on Dutch VAT experience. You've prepared Dutch btw returns and can work through the supporting records.
- Strong reconciliation skills. You've handled balance-sheet reconciliations, accruals and prepayments, beyond processing invoices. You investigate differences and follow them through to a resolution.
- Accuracy and ownership. You keep records organised, meet close deadlines and raise missing information or accounting questions early. You'd rather find the €12 difference than book it to suspense.
- Fluent English and professional working Dutch. English is our working language, and your manager doesn't speak Dutch. You can independently read and process Dutch invoices, tax correspondence and payroll documents.
- Comfort with systems and confidential information. You work confidently with spreadsheets, learn new accounting tools and handle financial and employee information carefully.
- Nice to have: Twinfield, Basecone or Spendesk (Exact, Odoo or similar also counts); multi-entity or multi-country bookkeeping, intercompany and consolidation; fixed-asset or inventory accounting in hardware or manufacturing; statutory audit support; Dutch payroll experience, ideally in Loket; an accounting qualification such as MBO-4/HBO, SPD or Praktijkdiploma Boekhouden; experience automating repetitive work.
