About this role
Background:
NASA is preparing for the Artemis missions, which will send astronauts to the Moon and lay the groundwork for future deep space exploration, including missions to Mars. During these missions, astronauts will face exposure to ionizing space radiation, a complex mixture of particles originating from Solar Particle Events (SPEs) and Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs). While Earth's geomagnetic field provides some protection for astronauts aboard the International Space Station, this shielding is unavailable beyond low-Earth orbit.
Current radiation risk mitigation strategies include selecting optimal crew members, minimizing time in space, and using passive shielding. However, for longer missions, such as to Mars, these measures may not suffice, as radiation exposure could exceed NASA’s career limit of 600 mSv. Recent studies suggest that medical countermeasures (MCM) may reduce cancer risks in the general population, which could also help mitigate space radiation risks. This project focuses on developing mechanistic cancer models to better understand how MCM can reduce cancer risks for astronauts, providing vital insights for safer space exploration.
Ideal Candidate Skills:
Technical Skills:
- Strong programming skills in python
- Knowledge of radiation biology or related fields.
- Experience with data analysis, modeling, or simulation tools.
- Familiarity with scientific research processes and methodologies.
Nontechnical Skills:
- Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Learning and Goals Statement:
As an intern, you will gain valuable experience in cutting-edge research on space radiation and its health impacts. You will develop skills in analyzing complex scientific data, contribute to the development of mechanistic cancer models, and explore the role of medical countermeasures in mitigating radiation risks. By the end of this internship, you will have a deeper understanding of space health challenges and the strategies used to ensure astronaut safety during long-duration space missions.
