Area of Interest: Relationship Management; Business Analysis and Consulting
Business Area: Commercial Bank; Retail Banking and Wealth
Short Description: Build skills, confidence and connections to help shape your future career path
About the business area
Relationship Management focuses on building strong client relationships, understanding customer needs, and connecting them with the right financial products and services to help them grow.
Business Analysis and Consulting supports this work by working directly with customers, identifying business needs, improving processes, solving problems, and helping teams deliver change more effectively for customers.
Who you are
You’re curious, open-minded and interested in exploring a career where customers, technology, problem-solving and impact come together. You don’t need to be a banking expert — what matters is your willingness to learn, your interest in working with others and your motivation to grow.
You could be a great fit if you enjoy understanding what people need, communicating clearly and finding practical solutions. You’re comfortable asking questions, analysing information and bringing ideas forward. You may also be interested in how organisations make decisions, measure value and deliver change.
The programme is particularly suited to students who want to understand retail banking from the customer’s perspective while also exploring how commercial thinking, digital capability and strategic execution help shape the future of banking.
What you'll do
We’ll assess your skills, and guide you to the business line which best fits your skills. Over four days, you’ll explore a business area based on your potential skills in either Retail Banking or Commercial Banking.
You could discover how Retail Banking supports customers in moments that matter, including everyday banking, complaints, disputes, and fraud prevention. Through practical activities, you’ll explore real customer journeys, understand the gap between policy and customer experience, and consider how products and processes can create better outcomes while managing conduct and operational risk. You’ll also explore how digital channels are designed and improved across app and web journeys. You’ll consider customer friction, adoption, experimentation, data and the responsible use of AI - including how technology can support customers without losing sight of fairness, security and human judgement.
You could gain insight into Commercial Banking and how teams support businesses and entrepreneurs. You’ll learn how colleagues connect customer and client needs to products and services, assess value, prioritise activity and build effective business cases.
You’ll work through interactive exercises, analyse information, solve business challenges and present your thinking. You’ll also hear from graduates and senior colleagues about their roles, career journeys and experiences at HSBC.
What you'll learn
Over four days, you’ll build a practical understanding of how modern banking works whilst developing skills you can use well beyond the programme. You’ll strengthen your confidence in analysing information, solving business challenges and presenting your thinking clearly. You’ll also learn how relationship-focused and back-office roles support customers and businesses in different ways, helping you understand where your strengths might fit best. Through interactive activities and conversations with graduates and senior leaders, you’ll gain a clearer picture of the skills these careers really require - and what you don’t need to know yet. By the end, you’ll leave with more clarity, stronger confidence and a better sense of your next step.
Where you'll work
You’ll spend time exploring either our Commercial Banking or Retail Banking business lines, exploring environments that support business clients or individual customers. You’ll see how relationship-led teams work with specialist functions to deliver joined-up support, while gaining insight into how customer and client banking works in practice. Over the programme, you’ll experience different team cultures, hear from colleagues across levels and get a feel for how customer and client-focused banking works in practice. Expect a welcoming environment designed to help you build confidence, connections and career insight.
