About this role

The Director of Investment Operations owns the operational side of Concurrent’s investment offering: trading and custodial operations, alternatives, fee billing, advisor transitions, manager and vendor relationships, and the systems and standards that keep them running. The Director is accountable for the department’s results, retains the work that carries the most risk, judgment, or firm-level visibility, and is responsible for building the processes and documentation that move repeatable work to the Senior Associate and beyond.

The Director inherits an established department with defined scope, active vendor and custodian relationships, and in-flight projects, and is expected to absorb that knowledge during a structured transition period and convert it into documented, repeatable procedures. The Director is the primary operational counterpart to Compliance, the custodians, Black Diamond, and the firm’s managers and vendors, and represents Investment Operations to prospective advisor teams. This role requires deep command of custodial and platform mechanics, sound judgment under time pressure, and a bias toward building systems over relying on individual effort.

Responsibilities

- Department ownership. Own the scope, priorities, and results of Investment Operations per the Focus Area Framework. Set and revisit the division of work with the Senior Associate, and report on volume, service levels, and risk to firm leadership.
- Transition and knowledge capture. Assume full accountability for every focus area by the end of a structured handover period, capturing tribal knowledge into SOPs and using the outgoing owner’s project management support on in-flight items.
- Trading and custodial escalations. Own resolution of live trading errors, settlement breaks, and trade corrections, including the trade correction policy with Fidelity Capital Markets. Handle complex NIGO cures, Schwab options and margin approvals, fee remediation, and direct-access and model-delivery setups across Fidelity, Schwab, Goldman, and Pershing. Escalate Rebalancer and block-submission defects to SS&C through fix, and oversee fixed income trade affirmation through its transition to the Fixed Income PM.
- Alternatives. Provide structural judgment on 1031 exchanges, feeder-fund mechanics, transfer sequencing, and fund classification. Manage platform onboarding and entitlements (iCapital, CAIS, BlueArc, Proteus) and maintain the Alternative Investment Lifecycle ownership map.
- Manager and vendor contracting. Negotiate and operationalize manager and vendor relationships, including contract terms, fee mechanics, compliance approvals, manager platform onboarding, custodial network setup (Fidelity SAN, Schwab Money Manager Relations, Goldman), and the payment workstream with Billing and Finance. Lead contract reviews with notice deadlines, such as rebalancer renewals, and run platform evaluations.
- Fee billing structure. Own fee schedule design, billing disputes, and reconciliation decisions with Finance (advance versus arrears, pro-rated billing, true-ups). Define how Billing detects when a manager fee schedule applies, and review the Senior Associate’s monthly exception results.
- Advisor transitions and business development. Own coordination, sequencing, and advisor-facing communication for the investment-operations workstream of incoming teams, and recommend keep-or-replace paths for legacy tools and contracts. Represent Investment Operations in Home Office Visits, demos, and tech stack diligence, coordinating with Investments Sales and Recruiting.
- Compliance and policy liaison. Serve as the operational counterpart to Compliance. Own the IPO access process, oversee discretionary application review, and take compliance-facing positions on operational policy.
- Advisor escalations. Give final answers on platform capability questions, hold relationship calls with advisor and operations leads, and review the Senior Associate’s outbound responses until accuracy is demonstrated.
- Systems, data integrity, and SOPs. Design the department’s intake systems, data-source hierarchies, and SOP library. Drive structural fixes for chronic issues, run periodic operational assessments, and require that every recurring task has a documented procedure, an owner, and a backup.
- People and delegation. Hire, train, coach, and evaluate the Senior Associate. Delegate deliberately (document, train, review, release), set thresholds for work released without review, and maintain cross-coverage for critical functions.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as reasonably assigned.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field, or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Minimum of eight years of experience in financial services operations, including at least three years in a leadership or senior role owning custodial, trading, or platform operations at an RIA, TAMP, broker-dealer, or custodian.
- Working command of custodial platforms (Fidelity and Schwab required; Goldman and Pershing preferred), trade and rebalancing systems, and SMA platforms. Experience with Black Diamond preferred.
- Experience with alternative investment operations, including subscription, funding, and post-trade administration. iCapital and CAIS experience preferred.
- Experience negotiating or administering manager and vendor agreements.
- Demonstrated ability to design processes, controls, and documentation, not only execute within them.
- Ability to explain platform mechanics and tradeoffs credibly to advisors, prospects, and executives.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and sound judgment in time-sensitive situations.
- Experience supervising or developing staff.
- Ability to step into an established function, learn it quickly, and take accountability for it without a long ramp.
