About this role

About the Role

We are a global commodity trading firm hiring a high-potential early-career accountant to take real ownership of our month-end close and grow into a full commodity trading accountant. This is not a data-entry seat: the core of the role is technical close work - trade accruals, inventory valuation, mark-to-market on physical forwards and hedges, broker reconciliations, intercompany, and IFRS group reporting.

You will report directly to the Regional Financial Controller and be developed deliberately:

Within your first year the expectation is that you own defined close deliverables end-to-end, not that you assist with them indefinitely. We run a modern close - we make real use of Excel automation and AI tools, and you'll have room to improve the processes you take on.

What You'll Do

Month-End Close & Trade Accounting (core of the role)

- Own recurring close entries: accruals and reversals, prepaids, leases, fixed assets, payroll allocations

- Prepare trade accruals for open costs at month-end using ETRM data (Symphony and RightAngle)

- Perform month-end inventory valuation, including physical inventory reconciliations to terminal statements and weighted-average cost calculations

- Prepare mark-to-market entries on physical forward contracts and hedge positions under IFRS 9

- Reconcile realized and unrealized hedge P&L between ETRM data and broker/clearinghouse statements

- Drive intercompany reconciliations and confirmations across global affiliates

- Reconcile cash and bank loan balances to bank statements and confirmations

Financial Reporting & Analysis

- Own trial balance reconciliations, tying account balances to supporting documentation

- Prepare components of the monthly group reporting package submitted to global consolidation (IFRS)

- Prepare monthly SG&A variance analysis; investigate and resolve anomalies

- Perform system-to-GL reconciliations between the ETRMs and Dynamics

Daily Operations

- Manage daily AP/AR posting, cash application, and Expensify expense processing, with AR/AP aging reviews

- Identify opportunities to streamline and automate routine processes - we support and encourage this

What We're Looking For

Required

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance

- 1–3 years in public accounting (Big Four or similar) or related industry, or a top-performing recent graduate with demonstrable technical strength (internships, case competitions, relevant coursework)

- Advanced Excel: pivot tables, XLOOKUP/INDEX-MATCH, and comfort restructuring large, messy data extracts

- A reconciliation mindset - you want the numbers to tie, and you independently run down the reasons they don't

- Intellectual curiosity about markets: you want to understand the trades behind the entries, not just book them

- Clear written communication; able to document processes and defend your numbers to reviewers

Preferred (not required)

- CPA progress (exams passed or in progress)

- Experience using AI tools in your work - we make good use of them and you'll fit right in

- Coding or scripting experience (Python, VBA, Power Query, or similar) - a genuine plus here, with real opportunities to apply it

- IFRS exposure, particularly IFRS 9 / financial instruments

- Working knowledge of Spanish

- Exposure to ERP systems (Microsoft Dynamics) or ETRM systems (Symphony, RightAngle, or similar)

Systems You'll Use

Microsoft Dynamics (GL/ERP)  ·  Symphony and RightAngle (ETRM)  ·  Expensify  ·  Excel and Power BI  ·  AI-assisted workflow tools

Why This Role

- Technical scope years ahead of peers: physical inventory, derivatives, MTM, and hedge accounting in year one - work most accountants don't touch until senior level

- Direct development by the Regional Financial Controller, with a defined path from owning deliverables to owning full close cycles

- A team that invests in modern tools - if you like improving processes, not just running them, you'll have the space to do it

- Compensation positioned at the top of the market for this level

- Global exposure: intercompany, consolidation, and multi-entity IFRS reporting

- Continuing professional education (CPE) paid by the firm
