About this role
WORK OUTDOORS. TAKE OWNERSHIP. KEEP WHANGAREI’S COASTAL ASSETS IN GOOD SHAPE.
We’re looking for a practical, reliable person to take responsibility for the day-to-day inspection and maintenance of coastal assets across the Whangarei District.
This is a genuinely autonomous role. You’ll plan your own work, travel between sites, inspect assets, complete routine maintenance, identify defects and report additional works to Council. You’ll also keep asset records and reporting up to date.
You’ll be working across a range of coastal assets including boat ramps, wharves, jetties, pontoons, stairs, sea walls and groynes.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
- Plan and complete scheduled inspections across the district
- Inspect assets, identify defects and record findings using a tablet-based field app
- Complete routine maintenance and minor repairs such as timber repairs, replacing fixings, greasing, painting and clearing debris
- Identify and report additional maintenance requirements and complete approved works
- Maintain accurate asset records, photographs and reports
- Liaise with Council representatives and respond to urgent or post-storm inspections when required
- Keep on top of your own programme and ensure work is completed on time
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
You don’t need to be a qualified tradesperson, but you do need to be genuinely handy and comfortable working things out for yourself.
You’ll have:
- Practical maintenance, building, construction or handyman experience
- Good general repair and maintenance skills
- The ability to work independently and manage your own workload
- Good communication skills and a professional approach with customers and Council
- Basic digital skills and confidence using a tablet, apps, email and spreadsheets
- Good attention to detail and the ability to complete accurate reports
- A reliable, trustworthy approach and a strong work ethic
- A current NZ driver licence
WHY JOIN US?
- Autonomous Role: Manage your own programme and take ownership of the work
- Varied Hands-on Work: Work across Whangarei’s coastline maintaining a wide range of assets
- Practical Role with Responsibility: Combine hands-on maintenance with inspections, reporting and Council liaison
