About this role

What You'll Work On

- Lead and develop the computational geometry software team, setting technical priorities and providing day-to-day direction and mentorship.

- Partner closely with manufacturing and mechanical engineers to understand production challenges and translate them into software requirements and development priorities.

- Guide the development of software that analyzes, manipulates, and generates complex 3D geometry for composite parts and tooling.

- Lead the development of internal engineering tools that improve the speed, quality, and scalability of manufacturing workflows.

- Help automate workflows across CAD/CAM, tooling, machining, and other manufacturing processes.

- Make technical and product tradeoffs based on both software considerations and the realities of manufacturing.

- Stay close enough to the code and architecture to provide technical guidance, review approaches, and contribute directly when needed.

- Help shape the team's technical architecture, development practices, and roadmap as Layup's manufacturing platform grows.

- Recruit, mentor, and grow the team over time.

What We're Looking For

- Professional experience in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field, with a strong understanding of how physical parts move from design into production.

- Strong software programming fundamentals to effectively lead a software engineering team.

- Experience leading engineers, technical projects, and/or cross-functional engineering initiatives.

- Experience with computational geometry, CAD/CAM systems, geometric modeling, or software involving 3D part geometry.

- Ability to translate ambiguous manufacturing problems into clear technical requirements and software solutions.

- Ability to work effectively across software, manufacturing, mechanical engineering, and operations teams.

- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment where both the product and manufacturing processes are continuously evolving.

Bonus Points

- Experience programming in Rust, C++, Go, Python, or similar languages.

- Experience with composites, CNC machining, tooling, additive manufacturing, or other advanced manufacturing processes.

- Experience developing software or automation tools used directly by manufacturing or mechanical engineers.

- Hands-on experience with CAD/CAM platforms, geometric kernels, mesh processing, solid modeling, or related 3D engineering tools.

- Experience taking engineering or manufacturing workflows that rely heavily on manual engineering judgment and turning them into repeatable software-driven processes.

- Experience leading or managing software engineers in a technical environment.

- Startup or small-team experience in fast-moving environments.
