JOB SUMMARY
The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides direct support and supervision to residents participating in Hope Haven's therapeutic community. The BHT is responsible for maintaining a safe, structured, and recovery-oriented environment through resident monitoring, behavioral observation, medication support, documentation, transportation assistance, and enforcement of program policies and procedures. The BHT serves as a key member of the treatment team by promoting resident accountability, supporting daily operations, and fostering a therapeutic atmosphere that supports recovery and personal growth.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Resident Support and Monitoring
- Provide supervision and support to residents in accordance with program rules and expectations.
- Monitor resident activities, behavior, and participation in program activities.
- Promote a safe, respectful, and recovery-focused environment.
- Assist residents with daily living activities and provide appropriate guidance and support.
- Observe and document resident behaviors, concerns, incidents, and progress.
- Enforce program rules and complete behavioral observations when warranted.
- Maintain professional boundaries and interactions with residents at all times.
Facility and Campus Monitoring
- Conduct routine campus monitoring by walking the entire campus at least four times per shift.
- Document observations and safety concerns on the Shift Status Report.
- Monitor resident movement throughout the facility and campus.
- Ensure residents comply with curfew, campus restrictions, and facility expectations.
- Secure facility entrances and monitor visitor access.
- Ensure no residents are present in restricted areas or unauthorized locations.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe environment.
Documentation and Reporting
- Complete end-of-shift reports documenting resident activities, incidents, concerns, and relevant information for incoming staff.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services provided.
- Record results of drug screens, breathalyzers, room checks, and other required monitoring activities.
- Create replacement IDs for residents.
- Report resident concerns, incidents, and safety issues to supervisory staff promptly.
- Document room inspections and communicate correction needs to counselors and supervisors.
Drug Screening and Resident Accountability
- Conduct random drug screens and breathalyzer tests in accordance with agency procedures.
- Accurately document and report results.
- Support resident accountability and compliance with treatment expectations.
Transportation and Resident Services
- Provide transportation to approved meetings, appointments, and recovery-related activities as assigned.
- Assist with resident needs while maintaining program boundaries and expectations.
- Coordinate resident property, donations, and room key procedures according to agency policy.
Medication Support Duties (Med-Tech Assigned Staff)
- Observe and document resident medication administration in accordance with agency policies.
- Maintain medication records and required documentation.
- Deliver medications to residents in quarantine as directed.
- Enter newly received medications into the medication management system.
- Scan and upload prescriber orders, medical documentation, and related records into Kipu.
- Assist residents who self-administer medications with required monthly documentation.
- Assist with weekly medication audits as assigned.
Customer Service and Professional Conduct
- Answer telephones and greet visitors professionally.
- Provide courteous assistance to residents, visitors, and community partners.
- Protect resident confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and agency policies.
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
- Work collaboratively with counselors, clinical staff, admissions staff, and administration.
- Participate in required meetings, trainings, and staff development activities.
Additional Duties
- Prepare and distribute snack bags as assigned.
- Conduct room inspections and environmental safety checks.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support program operations and resident care.
Qualifications
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate or Bachelor degree in Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Substance Use Disorders, or related field preferred.
- Minimum one (1) year experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders, mental health disorders, homelessness, or other vulnerable populations preferred.
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License and eligibility under Hope Haven's insurance carrier.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts as assigned.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and exercise sound judgment.
- Knowledge of substance use disorders, recovery principles, and behavioral health services preferred.
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to document services in electronic health records.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Willingness and ability to provide direct support and coverage within the facility on a 24/7 basis as operational needs require.
- Ability to respond effectively in crisis situations.
Clinical Documentation
- Complete all required clinical and operational documentation in Kipu and other agency-approved systems within established timeframes.
- Document resident interactions, behavioral observations, interventions, incidents, and significant events accurately and objectively.
- Enter drug screen and breathalyzer results into the appropriate documentation system.
- Complete behavior observations, room inspection reports, transportation logs, medication records, and shift reports as required.
- Document resident attendance, curfew violations, rule infractions, and other accountability measures according to agency procedures.
- Ensure all documentation meets agency, Medicaid, licensing, CARF, and regulatory standards.
- Communicate significant resident concerns, safety issues, and clinical observations to the treatment team through appropriate documentation and reporting channels.
- Maintain confidentiality and safeguard all resident records in accordance with HIPAA and agency policies.
