Position Objective: The Scientist will provide support services to the National Institute on Aging (NIA) within the National Institutes of Health.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Design and implement novel web-based data collection systems and programs for Realtime medical examination data collection in the most appropriate programming language. 1

- Create novel participant and personnel management systems to meet study operational requirements such as tracking participants or scheduling participant visits; implement and maintain programs and databases to perform this function. 2

- Create system for generating reports to participants based on data collected in the field, by laboratory tests, by instruments, and by information entered into web-based forms. 3

- Design, implement, and maintain databases that correspond to web-based programs, and implement programmatic mechanisms for transfers and backups from data collected in real-time on medical instruments such as EKG and DXA.

- Design, implement, test, and deploy software that minimizes data entry by staff and makes maximum use of instrument interfaces without compromising functionality, availability, reliability, access control, security, and performance of computing services for study staff and investigators.

- Perform database administration and programming.

- Perform system administration of web-server systems to ensure ongoing operations

- without any failure of data entry.

- Write reports and documentation related to programming tasks; ensure that programs are clearly written, well documented, and can be supported and maintained by any programmer with an intermediate level of skill in the language using source-code configuration and version control management.

- Export data from relational database to other software such as statistical programs (e.g., SAS) when needed by researchers and other programming personnel.

- Analyze problems and propose solutions that enhance the operation of the web-based

- data collection activities.

- Provide expert recommendations in application of Perl CGI to other study investigators.

- Make recommendations to physicians and technologists about optimal use of electronic media for record keeping and other study-related data management.

- Work products and documents related to performing database administration and programming; perform system administration of web-server systems to ensure ongoing operations without any failure of data entry; analyze problems and propose solutions that enhance the operation of the web-based data collection activities.

- Work products and documents related to providing expert recommendations in application of Perl CGI; making recommendations about optimal use of electronic media for record keeping and other study-related data management.

- Computer generated work including writing reports and documentation related to programming tasks; export data from relational database to other software such as statistical programs.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

- Ph.D. in a related discipline

- 3 years of specialized experience plus a Masters degree is equivalent to a Ph.D.

- Minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience performing similar functions

- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a computing environment, and experience with system utilities and system software maintenance utilities

- Knowledge of programming languages and methodologies such as PHP, Perl, AJAX, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Java, Bash, and batch scripting

- Ability to write novel web-based applications on Linux server to be used by OS-agnostic clients in a variety of browsers

- Experience working with various databases such as MySQL, and knowledge of SQL language and MySQL database management, access control, replication, and maintenance

- Fluency in Web Server Administration, Apache HTTP Server, HTML, XML and Web site development and administration. Excellent writing skills or awards for writing

Preferred Qualifications:

- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff

- Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
