Job Title: Lab Technician Job Description
The Lab Technician performs hands-on laboratory analysis at the bench, prepares chemical solutions, and maintains accurate laboratory documentation. This role supports routine and specialized testing, assists with equipment maintenance and calibration, and follows established laboratory methods, safety practices, and internal quality standards in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Conduct hands-on laboratory analysis and testing at the bench in accordance with established methods and procedures.
- Complete all laboratory reports and documentation accurately, clearly, and in a timely manner.
- Understand, follow, and stay current with all laboratory analysis methods and standard operating procedures.
- Assist with the routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory instruments and equipment to ensure accurate results.
- Understand and consistently apply laboratory safety practices, reporting techniques, and internal standards, policies, and procedures.
- Prepare chemical solutions according to standard formulas and documented protocols.
- Interpret a variety of instructions provided in oral, written, diagram, electronic, or schedule form.
- Work effectively in a routine, repetitive, and fast-paced laboratory environment while maintaining quality and accuracy.
- Handle and work safely with a wide range of chemicals, petrochemicals, and petroleum products.
- For Crude Assay Technician: Perform crude oil assay distillation in accordance with ASTM D2892 and ASTM D5236 and associated methods.
- For Crude Assay Technician: Read and interpret applicable data tables, graphs, and control charts; complete laboratory raw data sheets; and compute rates, ratios, percentages, and material quantities (linear, volumetric, weight, etc.).
- For Crude Assay Technician: Synthesize information from multiple sources to evaluate relevance for crude assay trending properties.
- Adhere to high standards of ethics and integrity in all laboratory activities.
- Carry out other laboratory-related duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience or academic training in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related science discipline.
- Ability to perform routine laboratory analyses and wet chemistry techniques accurately and safely.
- Strong quality control and quality assurance mindset with attention to detail in documentation and results.
- Good organization skills with the ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Ability to work effectively in a routine, repetitive, and fast-paced work environment.
- Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time while performing laboratory tasks.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in oral, written, diagram, electronic, or schedule form.
- Ability to compute rates, ratios, percentages, and material quantities (linear, volumetric, weight, etc.).
- Comfort working with chemicals, petrochemicals, and petroleum products while following safety protocols.
- Commitment to acting in accordance with high standards of ethics and integrity.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Associate degree in a science discipline is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or another science-related field is welcomed, including new graduates.
- Experience in laboratory quality control and quality assurance environments.
- Experience working under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines is beneficial.
- For Crude Assay Technician: Previous experience in crude oil assay distillation per ASTM D2892 and ASTM D5236.
- For Crude Assay Technician: Working proficiency with methods such as D5002, D97, UOP 163, D4294, and related crude assay methodologies.
- Ability to read and interpolate applicable data tables, interpret graphs and control charts, and complete detailed laboratory raw data sheets.
- Ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources and evaluate relevance for crude assay trending properties.
Work Environment
This is a full-time, third-shift position working Monday through Friday from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM. The Lab Technician works in a laboratory setting that is routine, repetitive, and fast paced, with ongoing exposure to chemicals, petrochemicals, and petroleum products while following strict safety protocols. The role involves standing for extended periods and performing bench work throughout the shift. You will work as part of a small team of approximately one to two lab technicians, collaborating closely to complete testing and maintain high-quality standards in the laboratory.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Naperville, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
