Summary

As an Environmental Protection Specialist, you will oversee the full lifecycle of hazardous materials and hazardous waste at a facility to ensure safety, compliance, and efficient operations. Manage material authorization, tracking, inventory control, and regulatory compliance using computer-based systems. Evaluate activities against federal, state, and local environmental requirements; identify compliance issues; and provide technical guidance to staff and project teams.

Duties

Manages hazardous materials entering, stored, and used at the facility; reviews material information, maintains inventories, and uses computer-based systems to authorize, track, and manage hazardous materials.
Evaluates hazardous material activities against applicable federal, state, and local requirements; identifies compliance concerns and provides technical guidance to facility personnel and project teams.
Prepares hazardous materials business inventory plans and regulatory reports, including Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) reports; compiles, analyzes, and validates data to ensure accurate and timely submissions.
Evaluates hazardous waste generation, accumulation, storage, transportation, and disposal activities for compliance with applicable requirements; maintains required records and documentation.
Conducts environmental compliance inspections and assessments; reviews facilities, operations, records, and practices to identify potential deficiencies and environmental risks.
Supports pollution prevention and waste minimization initiatives by evaluating material use, waste generation, and opportunities to reduce environmental impacts and regulatory burdens.
Coordinates with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies regarding hazardous materials, hazardous waste, reporting requirements, inspections, and compliance matters; responds to regulatory inquiries and provides requested documentation.
Provides technical assistance to organizations, facility personnel, and project teams on environmental requirements; develops procedures, guidance, and compliance documentation and supports implementation of environmental programs.

This position may require a one-year probationary period. If selected, the requirement to serve such period will be determined by Title 5 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 11. **See Additional Information section**

Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

To qualify for GS-12, Tyou must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level:

Managing hazardous materials through computer-based management systems, including reviewing material information, maintaining inventories and records, evaluating regulatory requirements, and ensuring materials entering a facility are properly authorized, documented, tracked, and managed in accordance with applicable requirements;
Collaborating and coordination with various agencies and officials to create hazardous materials business inventory plans and regulatory reports that follow EPA regulations;
Compiling and analyzing hazardous materials data; and ensuring accurate and timely regulatory submissions in accordance with applicable requirements.
